Help with specific unRaid functionality with ISP Change

Featured Replies

OK, let me first say, this is a peculiar issue and it touches some very different things, I'm not sure I know the best place to post the request for help.  Mods please relocate if you think there is a better page.

This appears to be and likely is an ISP issue, but the symptoms are all in unRAID and Plex, so I'm posing it here someone can tell me what the common thread is to the group of functions that don't work.  I have recently changed ISP's from Comcast to WOW.  I wont draw this help request into the details but Comcast was not sorting out a speed issue that was drawing my speed from 170 to 10 at night.  WOW hooked up and is running 500+down / 50 up with no line quality issues.  I've only had WOW since Thursday last week and due to changes I need to make in my comcast account, I still have my comcast modem up and running.

Tonight I realized some update / login functions related to unRAID and Plex weren't working and the more I dug the more I found.  The odd thing is when I plug my router back into comcast, they all work fine.  Something is being blocked when going through the WOW modem / internet service.  I'm not making any changes to my router or hardware on this end between one ISP and the other.

1st.  My hardware setup:

ASUS RT-AC66U router, no special or unusual settings, standard firmware, firewall turned on, uPnP on.

Comcast Cisco modem, set to bridge mode, wifi disabled. No idea of firewall settings.

Wow Arris modem set to bridge mode wifi disabled.  All firewall settings are turned off.

Summary of issues that don't work when connected to WOW modem but do work connected to Comcast.

  1. Dockers won't update.  They show updates are available but the update won't start.
  2. Can't check for plugin updates.  The all go very slowly, and while to doesn't show any errors, no needed updates appear.  However, when connected to comcast, the check runs quickly and updates are needed.
  3. Community Applications doesn't appear to update content.  It tries for an extended period of time (10 minutes or more) and then eventually the home screen comes up.  It shows an update to Community apps is available, but I don't know if it ever updated the content.  on Comcast, it all happens in seconds.
  4. Plex server is not visible outside my network.  This is usually flawless on Comcast.  On WOW, it says it is connected and visible outside the network but failed to return a public or private ip address to do so (they were blank with x's).  However, I can't actually connect from outside the network.
  5. The notice for a Plex update (inside plex settings) takes a little while but eventually returns.
  6. Plex Webtools is a function that requires a 2nd authentication with your Plex.tv login.  that login won't work.
  7. I can surf the web completely normally in Wow.  Speeds are solid, 0% packet loss, latency <50.

So what is the common thread here?   What is it that these above symptoms need in common that could be blocked by an ISP or modem hardware.  I'm not even sure where to begin trouble shooting.  I thought about taking WOW out of bridge, removing the static IP from my server, just connecting my PC and unRAID to to the back of the Wow modem and see if the functionality returns.   Since my router works with Comcast with the same settings, all it could point to is an incompatibility between my router and the modem.  Tomorrow I will take the modem back to WOW and ask for one that doesn't have the router built in at all.

Any advice or thoughts on how to troubleshoot this is greatly appreciated.

What DHCP, specifically what DNS settings does your router have when using WOW? Be sure to switch those over from Comcast.

My router is set to DHCP and should be taking the DNS servers it is handing out.  They come up as knowlogy, and that is who WOW used to be.

Additional Symptoms associated with Plex.

  1. For DVR Beta - The Program guide and associated graphics are extremely slow loading. They are coming slowly.
  2. You can't search the program guide at all, though if i was more patient maybe eventually something would come up, just based on the fact that photos do eventually show up.. very very very slowly.
  3. I tried to upload a poster for an added movie manually, it failed. When I was plugged back into comcast, it automatically loaded almost instantly

again surfing speeds are lightning fast.
