Setup Advice

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone!

I'm shortly going to be setting up my NAS solution for myself and my family to use.  I was looking at using the Dell PowerEdge FS12-NV7 server that I found on ebay for a very reasonable price as the basis, and adding some drives into that.  However, I cannot find much info on it, I was wondering whether anyone has any experience of using these boxes for unraid?

Secondly, I'm new to storage arrays.  Should I setup a parity array to ensure I have redundancy in my drives?

Thank you for any answers in advanced :)

So we need to know what is inside it. If it has a serial number you can look that up on Dell's website and it will tell you what the hardware is.

If it has a raid controller, such as a Perc 6i, you are going to want to replace that with an HBA that supports JBOD for unRAID and there are a few different models to choose from such as a Perc H310 or an M1015.

It does have a Perc 6i, I have found a H310 I can swap it with.  Will I then need to flash it to get into IT mode?

Thanks

Welcome to the unRAID forum!

Yes, by default the H310 needs to be flashed to IT mode.

Start reading in the wiki. You will find the link to the latest H310 toolset in there.

Excellent, thank you!

I think I might have the beginnings of a server coming together now!
