Randall8686
Hi all looking for more cores on my cpu, i have a dell ts-140 with a quadcore e3-1226 v3 buts its only 4 cores with no hyper threading. Im after more cores minimum of 4+4 hyper threading but if i can have more great My server is running File serverPlex serverNextcloud server2X vm's A vm for 3 cctv cameras (recording)Xbmc with gpu pass through. I may well add more later so some headroom would be great. So whats the best i can fit in terms of cores and whats the best bang for buck? Tia Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote Link to comment
tdallen
That's a socket 1150 Haswell so there are lots of options... if you buy used. You'll have fewer options buying new, I'd go for a 1246: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117318 That said, the important question is what is your motherboard capable of supporting? Are you sure it's a Dell TS-140? I know about the Lenovo TS-140 but didn't have any luck googling a Dell TS-140. Quote Link to comment
HellDiverUK
E3-1276v3 is the fastest your Dell T20/Lenovo TS-140 will take. It's 4 core with Hyperthreading that turbos to 4GHz. Quote Link to comment
Randall8686
Sorry its a lenovo ts140 lol was looking at my dell server whilst writing the post. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote Link to comment
Randall8686
Ok so no 6/8 core cpus avaliable then i guess a mobo and socket change would be needed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote Link to comment
tdallen
Nope, that would require going to socket 2011. Do you have a solid backup strategy? This machine would make a nice backup server if you built a new one. Quote Link to comment
Randall8686
No just an N54L backing up important dataSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote Link to comment
Randall8686
But tbh it works fine as a backup, all its doing is literally backing up about 1tb of important docs and photos, its got 4tb space. I dont backup media as its not "that" important if for some reason the server decided to explode etcSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote Link to comment
tdallen
Well you could try a faster 4+4 E3, or start over with a new server and target 6+ cores. If VM performance with multiple VMs is important to you then the 6+ cores route is the way to go. Quote Link to comment
Randall8686
Think i will start over with a 6+ core machine, going to need additional VM's in the future for the Mrs business so investing in some grunt now will make sense later. Maybe 8+8 will keep me going but might try find a dual cpu board for even more future proofing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote Link to comment
