April 4, 20179 yr Does anyone know if the built in UPS monitoring in unRAID works over COM ports, or is it only USB? Obviously the COM port has to be enabled in the BIOS for it to work, but is there anything in unRAID that has to be done for it work?
April 4, 20179 yr Serial for APC works fine, you just have to be careful to specify the correct cable number, as APC has had several different signaling configurations over the years.
April 5, 20179 yr Author And how would I do that. I have since gotten a serial to USB adapter but alas unRAID is still not recognizing the UPS. I have it set to UPS type=USB and cable type=USB. Should I be trying something else?
April 5, 20179 yr Author Its a SmartUPS 1400 2U rackmount. Don't know about the cable, its just a black serial cable and I have a serial to USB adapter.
April 5, 20179 yr APC serial cables aren't generic, they are wired special, and have a specific part number molded into the connector that you have to enter in to the apcupsd cable type field to enable communication. There are schematics online to copy some of the more common part numbers. I seriously doubt a generic serial to USB adapter would even be able to properly emulate a hardware serial port that the apc is expecting.
April 5, 20179 yr Author Ok i got this off the plug part: 940-0024C Off the actual cable I got this, but there is more if it is relevant:AWM 2464 E106016 Is that enough?

The USB to serial adapter may not work, but can try. Plug your USB to serial adapter into the server running unraid. View the log and there should be a line where it assigns a serial port, something like /dev/ttyUSB0 or something similar. Configure apcupsd with UPSCABLE: smart, UPSTYPE: apcsmart, DEVICE: /dev/ttyUSB0 (or whatever was in the log when you plugged in the USB to serial converter) and see what you get. Post a diagnostics after plugging in the converter if not sure.
