April 5, 20179 yr Hi all, so I have been getting parity errors, initially I got 218 errors twice in a row when doing a parity check, then last night the drive dropped out showing the dreaded "X" beside it and in the log it shows the messages below. So I have a dual parity setup and the second parity drive is only two weeks old. My question, I am going to go get an 8tb WD external drive and run a preclear on it. I know this will take a long time and I do have a 4tb which I could drop into the array to fill the missing parity drive. Should I use the 4tb drive or just wait until the 8tb runs preclear and then add as the new parity drive. Thoughts? Below are error logs from the existing parity drive which is the original parity drive that has been in use since I setup this server a couple of years ago and the drive age shows it as two and a half years old. I also tried moving the drive to a different slot in my server with no success. Patrick So below is the most recent log when I tried to add the parity drive back (the one that was initially "X" after the parity check. During the parity check it was giving me "unraid blk_update_request: I/O error" Apr 5 08:17:59 UNRAID_6 kernel: sd 8:0:1:0: [sdo] Synchronize Cache(10) failed: Result: hostbyte=0x04 driverbyte=0x00 Apr 5 08:17:59 UNRAID_6 kernel: sd 8:0:1:0: [sdo] Stopping disk Apr 5 08:17:59 UNRAID_6 kernel: sd 8:0:1:0: [sdo] Start/Stop Unit failed: Result: hostbyte=0x04 driverbyte=0x00 Apr 5 08:18:21 UNRAID_6 kernel: sd 8:0:7:0: [sdo] 7814037168 512-byte logical blocks: (4.00 TB/3.64 TiB) Apr 5 08:18:21 UNRAID_6 kernel: sd 8:0:7:0: [sdo] 4096-byte physical blocks Apr 5 08:18:21 UNRAID_6 kernel: sd 8:0:7:0: [sdo] Write Protect is off Apr 5 08:18:21 UNRAID_6 kernel: sd 8:0:7:0: [sdo] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 Apr 5 08:18:21 UNRAID_6 kernel: sd 8:0:7:0: [sdo] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA Apr 5 08:18:21 UNRAID_6 kernel: sdo: sdo1 Apr 5 08:18:21 UNRAID_6 kernel: sd 8:0:7:0: [sdo] Attached SCSI disk Apr 5 08:18:27 UNRAID_6 emhttp: HGST_HMS5C4040ALE640_PL1331LAGU5VMH (sdo) 3907018532 Apr 5 08:18:27 UNRAID_6 kernel: mdcmd (1): import 0 sdo 3907018532 0 HGST_HMS5C4040ALE640_PL1331LAGU5VMH Apr 5 08:18:27 UNRAID_6 kernel: md: import disk0: (sdo) HGST_HMS5C4040ALE640_PL1331LAGU5VMH size: 3907018532 Apr 5 08:21:36 UNRAID_6 emhttp: shcmd (187): /usr/local/sbin/set_ncq sdo 1 &> /dev/null Apr 5 08:21:36 UNRAID_6 emhttp: shcmd (188): echo 128 > /sys/block/sdo/queue/nr_requests
April 5, 20179 yr Community Expert SMART for the disk would be better. Syslog snippets are seldom sufficient. For v6, you should always go to Tools - Diagnostics and post the complete diagnostics zip, which contains syslog(s), SMART for all disks, and many other useful things. Not obvious that a drive only "2 years young" has actually failed. Connections are by far more common cause of disk disabled. Since I don't know (no diagnostics) how many disks are in your array, I won't comment on how big the risk is with running only single parity.
April 6, 20179 yr Author So I am attaching the diagnostics file below. I switched the 1st parity drive out for an existing drive I had and then I switched the drive bay and ran parity again. When I went to bed last night it was at 92% complete but when I got up this morning the drive again had an "X" beside it saying parity is disabled. The second parity drive is showing valid and the history for the parity check is showing incomplete with 0 errors. I pasted below the full drive info from the parity drive also. The system has 15 data disks, 2 parity drives and 2 ssd cache drives in RAID 1. I am running 2 Supermicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 cards, an IO Crest 4 Port SATA III PCI-e 2.0 and the motherboard is an MSI H97 with an i5 and 8gb of memory. April 6, 20179 yr Author So as an additional update, the drive that I swapped in seems to be failing, when I restarted the array it still had an "X" beside it and so I went to the info and it shows bad sectors and so I pulled it and checked in Windows and it shows bad sectors and SMART warnings too. So I will have to RMA that drive which is only 5 months old (a WD Blue) I am still wondering with the first drive that had an issue, it is currently running preclear in my backup server, I guess it could be possible that I have two drives failing

Post the SMART report for the old parity if you want a second opinion.
April 6, 20179 yr Author I have pulled the drive and will RMA it. I am awaiting the preclear on the first parity drive to complete to see if it is also dying. I have 2 8tb external WD drives which I am currently preclearing and hope to replace the existing parity drives with those.
