Arranging Drives in a sever chassis

Featured Replies

Hi all,

so I have a Norco 4220 20 bay chassis and while troubleshooting my setup I charted where the drives are in the bays (the drives came from my previous setup and so I just moved them from old slot one to new slot one) and some of the drives are in sequence and others are not. No biggie, but now it has made me wonder how you guys are doing it. My two concerns are airflow and load on the SATA ports.

On airflow I believe I should keep the two parity drives away from each other and possibly on separate controller cards (I have 2 Supermicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 6 ports on the motherboard and an IO Crest 4 Port SATA III PCI-e 2.0 card.
For other drives is there anything else I should be considering? I have an 850 corsair psu (single rail) which plugs into the backplane of the Norco chasisis. I also have 3 120mm fans pulling air across the drive bays and 2 80mm Artic F8 pulling air out of the case. Overall when the case has all drives running the hottest drive gets to 40c and the rest anywhere between 35c and up. My concern on that is that we are coming into the summer and so I expect the ambient temps to rise and so I want to make sure everything stays cool :)
