How to diagnose kernel panic freezes

Featured Replies

Hello, I've recently installed unRaid 6 on a PC, and have been encountering some issues with periodic crashes.  So far it's happened 3 times since I've installed (~7 days ago).  The most recent time I wasn't able to get a look at the terminal output as I was experimenting with some VMs and had my video card passed through.  But the two crashes before then were kernel panics.

What is the best way to start diagnosing these issues? When it happens, I am not able to connect via SSH or the WebUI, and I am not able to type anything into the terminal either, so grabbing the diagnostics or syslog is impossible.

After the second crash, I left memtest on overnight, it went through 4 full passes and found no errors, my cache and array disks are all new and report no SMART errors, and I don't believe that the server was under any severe load when the crashes occur.

Any recommendations of how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

The best way is to install the 'Fix Common Problems' plugin and then put it into troubleshooting mode.

Great, thanks! I had the plugin installed already, but wasn't aware of troubleshooting mode.  I'll enable that now and wait patiently for the next crash.

Note that troubleshooting does not (deliberately) survive a reboot.    You need to enable it any time you boot and want it to be active.
