move 2 VMs to different server?

Featured Replies

I need to move my Win7 VM and Ubuntu VM from  TOWER2 to TOWER.

TOWER currently has NO VMs in it.

Currently nothing is passed through to either VM.

If anyone has accomplished this feat... please let me know the steps....

If not I suppose it is time to start playing...

Thanks crew!

For the Ubuntu VM you would just copy the image file used for the boot drive.  Setup a new VM with the parameters you want it to have selecting the image file as the boot drive.  Then just boot it up and it is transferred.

For the Windows VM the process is similar but may require reactivation once done.  If you copy the GUID from the XML to the new VM on the other server it may not require reactivation as I could swear I saw someone say that before - but I could be wrong.  I've always just reactivated my Windows VMs when I've transferred them myself.

You can also try this:

-disable VMs on both servers

-copy the libvirt.img from T2 to T

-copy old Vdisks

-enable VM on Tower making sure it's using the copied libvirt.img

-old VMs will now show up on the VMs tab, you'll just need to adjust the paths and any other different settings

This is NOT expected...
I ended up copying over the 2 vdisk1.img files and set these up as manual paths under the primary vDisk location.
I then added 2 new VM's, but toggled to 'not create new' before hitting apply... all settings the same as the original vDisk location.

The windows machine came right up, no Reactivation required!
The ubuntu machine (actually, Elementary OS) refused to Boot!  It kept throwing a linux error after the 'bios' screen.  At this point most of my mapping work is done (as I retained the 'how to' in my signature]

I did NOT copy the libvirt.img ... ignorance on my part.

Thanks crew ;)
