Looking for 2nd SSD Advice

Featured Replies

I have a 250GB SSD as my cache drive, I use it for fast writes on common user shares and storage locations for a couple of Windows VM's I have running.  I originally ordered a 2nd SSD with the intent to create a pool but I'm 2nd guessing that original decision. Here's why...

  • The only data that a route thru the cache are media (Movies and TVShows) so that I can take advantage of the speed. Loosing a Movie would not be a major concern.
  • I back up my VM's daily so should the SSD have issues recovery would be simple.

With those two points in consideration the advantage of a pool sounds limited to me and I'm thinking that maybe I just use the 2nd SSD as either a mounted drive or a drive in the array that is simple reserved for my VM's and let the existing SSD handle just file caching duties.

What do you guys think.....any other creative ideas...?  I have the 2nd SSD just need to figure out what to do with it.

Writes to SSDs in the array would be limited by the parity drive speed.

Personally I think letting unRAID manage it as part of the cache pool is simplest option. If you don't want the redundancy of raid1 you can do raid0 to add capacity.
