May 22, 20179 yr Just went to this link and it's $259 today! Amazon is $311 today. That's a big difference! I'm thinking of picking one up to make my parity drive. Any thoughts on that?
May 22, 20179 yr That's an excellent drive and would be a good choice for parity. But consider your overall storage needs and what path you plan to take for increasing the size of your array. There's no reason to upgrade parity to 8TB unless that's the size you plan to buy for your data drives going forward. I know some folks who had 2TB drives; upgraded to an 8TB parity; and then started purchasing 4TB data drives to upgrade their storage. Clearly in that case it was a waste to buy the 8TB data drive.
May 22, 20179 yr I agree fully. Good advice. I currently have a 4TB HGST as my parity with a second 4TB HGST sitting there pre-cleared and ready to be installed in an emergency (failure of parity or data drive). I have 5-3TB data drives. If I went to 8TB parity, I'd probably buy 2 and do the same setup. I had this setup before the dual parity stuff came out. I need to read up on that some more also.
May 22, 20179 yr The 8T is now only a few dollars more than the 6T. Weird. Of course this is still $80 more than the Seagate 8T archives, which are currently at the top of my list of drives to buy.
June 22, 20179 yr It is $269 today. $30 less than the drive I just ordered. Looks like there might be a "return to sender" on a delivery coming soon. Let me add I choose to buy the Ultrastar model with the 5 year warranty. The HGST NAS drives have a 3 year warranty. I guess I'll just keep the drive that's coming.
