Alter 2 x 4 TB drive to one single 6 TB drive

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

this are my drives now:

I just installed a second 6 TB parity drive. All fine.

At the next step i want to remove the 2 x 4 TB drives and put in another 6 TB drive. How can it be done? You can easily see that my used data is not so much at the moiment. I really don't want to leave this 2 drives into the system. I need them for another build.

Any suggestions?

Couple of ways to accomplish what you want (Rough directions - not click by click).  Take screen shots before so you know what the current assignments are

Copy the contents from disk4 to disk1 (use Krusader docker app -> make sure you copy from /mnt/disk4 to /mnt/disk1)

Tools -> New Config

Remove disk 4 from the array, and let parity rebuild

Upgrade disk 1 to the 6tb and let unRaid rebuild disk1 onto the 6tb

or

Upgrade disk1 to the 6tb and let unRaid rebuild onto it.

Copy disk4 to disk1 (Krusader)

Tools -> new config

Remove disk 4

Let parity rebuild itself.

or

Mount the 6tb as an unassigned device (UD plugin).  Format it as xfs

Copy both 4tb's onto it (Krusader)

Tools -> New Config

Set disk 1 to be the 6tb, remove disk 4

Start the array and let parity rebuild itself.

This won't work, a disk formatted (or to be more accurate, partitioned) by the UD plugin won't be recognized as a valid partition by unRAID and it will be unmountable.

Thx... I wasn't sure about that one

However... If you are not currently using a cache drive, you can certainly partition and format a drive using the cache slot and move it to the array with a new config command later. That way you can even use the cache:prefer settings to move a specific share to the drive you wish to migrate. Just be sure to reset to cache:yes or cache:no on any shares changed to cache:prefer before starting the array with a new config and that prepopulated drive.

I'd suggest rebuild one of your 4T with the 6T, and leave the other 4T in there for growth. That would leave you with one 4T in hand to do something else with.

Less risk and longer time till you need to add space.

Just my $.02.
