iTunes wireless backup

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm trying to use my unraid server to backup my numerous i-devices via wifi. For that to happen, the device has to connect physically once via USB, after that, it can do the backup via wifi. One way is to have a MacOS VM or a Windows VM running iTunes. The other is a Mac mini running with the storage location mapped to the unraid server.

Does anyone have something like this up and in use?

I've got my music library on an unRaid share, with the iTunes library files themselves also hosted on unRaid array.
On my main PC (separate box) I created a symbolic link back in the iTunes library location to its counterpart location on unRaid server.

Now I just open iTunes on my main pc, I can sync iDevices, play music... also any new purchases download to the unRaid array (as you would expect).

If I need to reinstall your OS, or run from a VM, or just want to set up another PC, I just need to reinstall iTunes and recreate the symbolic link to the array and its business as usual.

I also installed the daapd docker, which shows the music library as a itunes library for streaming purposes (controlled by other libraries or apple's remote app), so your main PC (or VM) doesn't need to be running to stream music :)
