Hypothetical build

Featured Replies

Finally think I'm going to do this...

CASE: Antec P180 (already have)

CPU: Intel E5200 (already have, but will buy a new chip for my HTPC)

RAM: Any DDR2... how much will I need?  $40?

MB: Super Micro C2SEE  (http://www.provantage.com/supermicro-mbd-c2see~7SUPM321.htm) $120 (This is the only one of the 3 levels from the wiki I can find in stock!)

New HD: WD Green 2 TB  $120

unRaid Pro on flash drive: $140

Old HDs:

2000 x2

1500 x2

1000 x2

750 x2

500 x2

320 x1 (cache drive maybe?)

All those are SATA, except for one of the 500's

So I'd be looking at about $420 to build up the base unRaid system, giving me about 8TB of storage, with parity protection and cache...

I would be needing the following though:

SATA card: That's 12 drives... 6 on the motherboard... I'd need more!

Places to put drives: The case has 6  3.5" bays, and 4 5.25" bays... getting pretty full!! Could I use same drives in USB/esata enclosures, and still have them in the array? What should I get for adapting the 5.25" bays to fitting HDs?

Networking: The unRaid would be in my front room closet, where it could reach my XBMC HTPC with a cable, but it would have to talk to my main computer over wireless... I have a wireless N router right next to my main system... I should be okay speed wise, because any 1080 HD stuff would only be going to the HTPC... My main computer would just pull music off the server, and back stuff up overnight.

But what would I need networking wise... probably a N wireless thing for the unRaid, and just a ethernet cable to hook the unRaid to the HTPC?

Thanks for any advice!

I have the P182 and quite frankly, it's a pain to use as a file server. Oh well, it's free...

That board seems to use DDR3 RAM so better replace that RAM choice. Highly suggest going with at least 1 stick 2GB DDR3 (~$50). That'll make it easier to upgrade should you need to do so.
