Which slackware version is unRAID 4.5.3 based on?

Featured Replies

I could find the kernel version used but as /etc/slackware-version is missed still unsure on the actual slackware version used in unRAID 4.5.3? Is it Slackware 12.2 or 13? I need to download some additional packages. Btw, found a nice site for downloading slackware package here http://slackware.opennix.com/ They also list dependencies between packages.

Pretty sure it is 12.2, with one or two features from 13. (i.e. the .txz installpkg support)

Fortunately, unlike some distributions, Slackware are more like a point in time.  Packages from newer releases will often work unless they absolutely need a library function only in the newer release.

Most of unRAID is from Slackware 12.2, however the new kernel, package utils, and udev layer are from 13.x. As Joe L said, most of the packages from Slackware-Current will work, but it depends on the library functions they use.

FWIW, I have unRAID running on top of my full Slackware-Current (13.1) install without issues.

Guys, thank you much!

BRiT, how can I run unRAID on top of a slackware install? I need to compile some packages and was thinking which route to go, either install Slackware in a VM (need VMware to get running first) or install gcc and libs on unRAID so that I am able to compile sporadically packages needed. VMware will help get a Windoz VM too, which I potentially might need sometime.

If all you need is the compiler check out the newest unMENU package manager.  It has an package for the compile tools, make, etc.   In fact, it is used to compile several of the other possible packages where pre-compiled slackware releases were not available.

Download from here:

http://unraid-unmenu.googlecode.com/files/unmenu_install.zip

http://unraid-unmenu.googlecode.com/files/unmenu_install13.zip

mkdir /boot/unmenu

put the unmenu_install program in /boot/unmenu

then type

cd /boot/unmenu

unmenu_install -i

or

cd /boot/unmenu

unmenu_install -u

run unMENU by typing

/boot/unmenu/uu

Once you install the compiler you can then use it as you like and not need an entire vmware environment for compiling an occasional program.

Edit:

I was forced to make a change to the unmenu_install program.  I found it incorrectly identified package-config files you had edited as being out of date and needing to be replaced with an un-edited version.  Obviously, this would not work too well, un-doing the variables you had just configured..   This also gave me the opportunity to replace the download file name with something I can change over time as I replace new versions.

So far, 5 or 6 people downloaded the initial version I posted.    The current version says "Revision 20" on the top line.  If yours says "Revision 19" please download a new copy from the link above.

There's a couple of posts in the forums about this and a few wiki articles on doing so; installing VMWare on unRAID, installing unRAID on Slackware, installing compiler tools on unRAID (using unMenu).

Hmm, other possibility would be to add a VM to Parallels on my working Macbook and install Slackware 13 there, use it to compile stuff and then transfer ready made packages to unRAID!?

Just a note, I'm running unraid 4.5.1 on a Slackware 13 installation. I just matched the kernel to the one unraid uses. All works fine.

That should work just fine.  I do basically the same, only with VirtualBox on XP.

Purko, I took that route and got Slackware 13 already up and running in a VM. Perhaps I would do a 12.2 too... Thanks!
