Permission Help

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone,

So far I'm loving UnRaid. Its a long story how i got here. But I'm glad I'm here now. I need assistance on how to fix my permission to multiple folders. I know it might be not the norm but it cleaner in my eyes when i do this.

Ok Say i have two users. "Dog 1 and Dog 2"

I created a share called Disk 1 and Disk 2.

And a Share called "Movies"

For Dog1 i create i folder called Home in Disk 1. It has all his personal folders and doc in there. When he's logs into Dog 1.

For Dog 2- He has a Home folder in Disk 2 and pics and personal doc ect.

Exp:

Disk 1:Dog 1 Home:---

             --Pic

             --Docs

--Movies<--- Alias File ( Same movie folder)

Disk 2:Dog 2 Home:---

             --Dog Pic

             --Docs for food

--Movies<---- Alias File ( Same movie folder)

Movie Folder - I have one main Movie folder that has all the movies on Disk 3. When i give them permission to access the Movie folder it showed up below the Disk1 & Disk2  folders on both Dog 1 and Dog 2.  What i did to fix it was create a Alias file of the movies folder and drag them to a new Home folder i created in Dog 1 and Dog 2.  The choose Yes:Hidden on the Main Movies folder in Disk 3. Now they both see the movies folder in there home folders. And the movies file are coming from one main folder.

My issue is that when either Dog1 or Dog2 login into their profile they both see Disk 1 and Disk 2 folders. (Mac) Even thou they can't access each other folders. They still can see it there.

How can i make it so they don't see each other Home folders. Exp: Disk1 and Disk 2

SMB Security Settings: Yes   - if i choose hidden on Disk 1, then Dog 1 can't see the folder even thou it was already connected.

Thank you again for every help on this forum. Try to read as much as i can.

a guess, under shares>share name, scroll down to smb security settings and make security "private" and not "secure."

Ya i tried that too. Only only use private. Because i do not want any guest accounts having access to the files.

It is a limitation of the SMB protocol that you cannot hide shares in the way that you want.   All exported shares on a given server are visible to all users who can access the server.  The closest you will get is to have the shares hidden so that each user has to know the name of the share he uses to be able to connect to it.

You should not be creating User Shares with names like 'disk1' as these can get confused with Disk Shares of the same name.   In fact I am surprised the GUI let you create User Shares with such names (assuming you are talking about User Shares and not Disk Shares).

Hmm very interesting... I didn't know that was a SMB limitation. Well time to find a work around for this problem. The adventure awaits. I know there has to be a way. I'v done it on another product but forgot the protocol i used. . But i will just get this backup setup and then work on that project later.

I didn't name the shares Disk1, Disk2.. I just want to use that as a example. To explain my issue. Thank you again for your help.
