Remove and Renumber Drives?

Featured Replies

I am going to replace 3 smaller drives in my array with one bigger one. The Disk that I am removing are 1,2, and 3.

I have already moved all data from disk2 to disk6, unassigned disk2, shutdown server and unhooked disk2. Started server and hit restore then started the array which did a parity resync. All worked out just fine but now it still says that disk2 is not installed, which it isn't. But then I am going to be done I am going to have disk 1,2&3 showing as not installed. So the question is can you just reassign disks to different numbers whith out causing problems?

What I need to do is move disk 4 to 1, 5 to 2, 6 to 3, and 7 to 4

Yes, you can move them.  You might need to re-do some of your user-share config for permissions, included/excluded disks, since the numbers will change.

If all you do is un-assign and re-assign to get rid of the empty logical slots in the middle you can the use the trust-my-parity procedure as described in the wiki.  Just be certain to assign all the disks. (don't leave one out) otherwise the parity will not be correct.

Exactly as Joe says. I've done this a couple of times now, and will do again when I replace my 1 TB drives with 2 TB ones.

Move them before you hit restore and start the server. Get it all done at once.
