May 29, 20179 yr As the title says, I'm totally new to Unraid but SUPER excited from what all I've seen on what you can do. I want media storage/server with parity-easy---but also want to run Linux,Apple, and Windows VMs and will be gaming with Windows. I've been looking through builds and have this to start. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Old case I have laying around-should be fine.NZXT https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00752QYLU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Mobo-Supermicro https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182995&ignorebbr=1 EVGA 650w PSU--Will I need more considering use of discreet GPU??? https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438094&ignorebbr=1 Ram-32 gig https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820242165&ignorebbr=1 Xeon CPU https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117613&ignorebbr=1 Cache Samsung EVO 256g M.2---Will this be big enough, or do I need the 500 gig? And do I need 2 for parity of the cache? https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820147593 Going to use an Icy Dock for 5 of the drives. Two 6 TB hitachi and three 4TB. --This is to start. If I understand correctly, I'll need to also use a discreet GPU--I'll go with Nivida. Haven't picked one out yet. And it looks like my Mobo doesn't have sound-so I'll need a sound card as well? Any feedback is greatly appreciated Edit- I couldn't find my exact Mobo, but found one similar to make a build list https://pcpartpicker.com/list/z8rHtJ Edited May 29, 20179 yr by Evilgardener
June 1, 20179 yr Take a look at the motherboard manual, I think the M2 drive will up a PCIE slot, although not sure which one.
June 3, 20179 yr Pick a different CPU!!!! Make sure the Xeon you select has on-board graphics, or you will not be able to passthrough a discrete graphics card to a virtual machine. I had the E3-1230 v5 and was not able to pass through my graphics card until I bought a Xeon that has HD Graphics P530. (Please research, this requirement may or may not have changed when I dealt with this problem a year ago) Your discrete graphics card would handle sound. No need for a sound card. The 650w 80+Gold PSU you selected is OK. I have a 450W 80+Gold running 5 Hitachi drives, a Xeon E3-1245 v5, C236 motherboard, and an Nvidia GTX 1070 and everything hums along fine. I would recommend at least 500GB SSD cache if you plan on virtualizing multiple machines as well as gaming. Edited June 3, 20179 yr by spencers
