Cache Configs

Featured Replies

Are any of you running one of the cache setups listed below? I'd really like to hear any pros or cons you have or any other cache configurations you might have. My use case scenario is mainly file server with the lite rendering duties. I only run 2 VM's but would like them to run as smooth as possible. My worry is mixed workload performance (extracting a down;load from SABnzb while copying to the array while watching a video from Plex). Anyway, here are the cache setups I've been considering.

  1. 1tb SATA 6Gbps SSD
    • appdata, system, etc.. :Preferred Cache
    • Media: Cached
    • Downloads: Preferred Cache
  2. 1tb NVME SSD
    • appdata, system, etc.. :Preferred Cache
    • Media: Cached
    • Downloads: Preferred Cache
  3. 2x 512GB SATA 6Gbps SSD (RAID 0)
    • appdata, system, etc.. :Preferred Cache
    • Media: Cached
    • Downloads: Preferred Cache

Is cache redundancy something i should be worried about? Will regular backups of "appdata, system, etc..." be enough of a safety net? Do any of these setups offer a significant performance bump in mixed workloads over the others? Any input would greatly appreciated and, as always, thanks for reading.

Decided to go with option 1 and everything seems to be working fine. The only issue I'm having now is, transfers between different shares on the same disk take a long time and have very inconsistent transfer speeds? Transfers from my "Downloads" share to my "Media" share, in particular. My understanding is that they are both on my cache SSD and moving files between them should be instantaneous? do I have the wrong idea here? Is there a way to improve these transfers?

User shares have separate mount points so the OS doesn't handle them as if they are on the same drive.

You can access the files on the drive directly, for example, at /mnt/cache/Downloads and /mnt/cache/Media, if working from the command line / Midnight Commander or from Krusader docker.
