April 9, 201016 yr So I have been looking all over the forums about this, and i know its easy, but i can not get the syslinux.exe to run. I am using a mac, but running windows 7 through VM ware. i go into cmd and run syslinux.exe -ma e: And no matter what i do i get "Accessing physical drive: Access is denied. Did not successfully update the MBR; continuing..." now it creates the ldlinux.sys file on the flash drive but its a locked file, and the flash will not boot. I am still slow in the windows world, anyone know what i am missing? Thanks for the help
April 9, 201016 yr Did you use "Run As Administrator" to open the command prompt? Odds are the Win7 UAC (User Access Control) is preventing you from writing completely to the drive.
April 9, 201016 yr Yup, you need to run the cmd prompt as administrator.. I had the same issue not too long ago
April 9, 201016 yr Author Ok looks like run as admin works in windows 7, thank you so much for that suggestion. Now when I boot, from the flash, it looks like the BIOS is trying to boot of the flash drive, but it is saying missing OS. I copied the files directly to the flash drive, Do i need to try 1 more time or go back to the BIOS settings
April 9, 201016 yr Make sure that your flash drive is set as your first boot device in BIOS. If the change isn't sticking, you may need to replace your CMOS battery.
April 9, 201016 yr It's worth going though the BIOS step by step to get the USB stick to be the bootable device. For example, my Asus board required you to set the boot device as "Removable media", but you also have to specify what type of removable media it is in another part of the BIOS. That's a little from memory, but it's worth checking. It might also be worth redoing the USB stick. Ensure that you get into the command line via Administrator - I had a similar problem to yours. Bring up the start menu and search for "command" - the command prompt link should appear. Right-click and select "run as administrator". If the file path that is displayed is C:\windows\system32 then you're running the administrator command prompt. If it reads something like c:\Users\username then the syslinux file won't work. Then again, I'm not much further along the unRAID journey!
April 10, 201016 yr Author Ok so this is getting me in circles. My MB is a ASUS M4a78l-m and using a sandisk cruzer micro 2GB I have made sure to format the sandisk as FAT and ran syslinux.exe as admin, then added the files from UNRAID. As far as BIOS i have it set : Advanced Onboard Devices Configuration Onboard AC'97 Audio [Disabled] Onboard LAN Boot ROM [Disabled] Serial Port1 Address [Disabled] Parallel Port Address [Disabled] USB Configuration USB Function [Enabled] Legacy USB Support [Enabled] USB 2.0 Controller [Enable] USB 2.0 Controller Mode [HiSpeed] USB Mass Storage Device Configuration USB Mass Storage Reset Delay [20 Sec] Device #1 SanDisk U3 Cruzer Mi Emulation Type [Hard Disk] Power Suspend Mode [s1 (POS) only] ACPI 2.0 Support [No] ACPI APIC support [Enabled] Boot Boot Device Priority 1st Boot Device [sandisk U3 Cruzer] 2nd Boot Device [Disabled] Hard Disks 1st Drive [uSB:Sandisk U3 Cruzer] 2nd Drive [sATA: 3s-Hitachi HD] 3rd Drive [sATA: 3M-WDC WD15EA] Boot Settings Configuration Quick Boot [Enabled] Full Screen Logo [Disabled] AddOn ROM Display Mode [Force BIOS] Bootup Num Lock [On] PS/2 Mouse Support [Auto] Wait For 'F1'if Error [Disabled] Hit 'DEL' Message Display [Enabled] Interrupt 19 Capture [Disabled] Before is was saying no bootable source, but not that i fixed everything it boots to: Missing operating system. Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key_ Is my problem the USB stick's set up wrong or the BIOS, i feel my problem lies on the stick, but really I don't see how i could mess it up, its not that complex ._. ANyways thanks for continued input from the community.
April 11, 201016 yr Author ok well problem solved if anyone else runs intro this. WIndows 7 did not play nice, booted up on my windows XP vmware box and everything worked fine.
April 13, 201016 yr Same here (Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit) - the big problem I had was getting a Administrator command prompt. Once I solved that (which only took 10 mins) everything was fine.
