April 10, 201016 yr Hello All, So I just built my first unRAID server and I am using 4.5.3 Pro. There are 4 x 2TB drives in it and 3 are data and 1 parity. Pretty basic setup. I am running the server now and the Parity drive is taking FOREVER to complete. It is currently running at 6,607 KB/sec, is that normal? This seems awfully slow to me and transfering files from Win 7 to the server across a GBLan was going at only 4.5MB/sec
April 10, 201016 yr You could provide some details about your server, and also post the syslog. http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Troubleshooting
April 10, 201016 yr Author sorry about not looking at the wiki, didn't quite realize it existed. Going to review it now and if I need more help will respond here...thanks so much for letting me know about it!
April 10, 201016 yr Author so I read the Wiki and I am not seeing if my speeds are normal or not. Here is my setup. Mobo: Asus M2N78-LA CPU: AMD Athlon X2 7750 RAM: 1.5GB DDR2 PSU: Thermaltake 600W Purepower Case: Cooler Master Centurion 590 HDD1: WD 2TB Greedn 64MB Cache HDD2 WD 2TB Greedn 64MB Cache HDD3 WD 2TB Greedn 64MB Cache HDD4 WD 2TB Greedn 64MB Cache USB: Lexar 512MB Firefly Thanks in advance. syslog.txt
April 10, 201016 yr Parity is taking FOREVER to complete. It is currently running at 6,607 KB/sec, is that normal? 6MB/s parity check is way too slow for the hardware you listed. I noticed that all your disks are WD20EARS. Did you put jumpers on pins 7-8 before you put the disks in the server? (Not that the lack of jumpers alone will cause such a dramatic slowdown. There must be something else wrong there) Did you preclear the disks before assigning them to the array, to weed out any problematic disks? Can you run SMART reports on the disks and post them here?
April 11, 201016 yr Author Thanks for the help on this. So I was annoyed and went and put in another motherboard and I am getting the same issue. To answer some questions. Yes I precleared the drives. Yes I ran a SMART log, attached it here Attached is a new syslog No the 7-8 pins weren't jumped, they are now and same issue - 6,347 KB/sec Parity Sync speed New Mobo - ASUS M4A78L-M (Same issue) I am relatively frustrated right now as I was expecting much better results than this. Am I wrong to be expecting faster speeds? smart.txt syslog.txt
April 11, 201016 yr Author OK so it turns out I put the jumpers on the wrong pins Now that the jumpers are in the right spot for EARS I am getting 26KB/sec 400% increase, is that about right now? Thanks!
April 11, 201016 yr Now that the jumpers are in the right spot for EARS I am getting 26KB/sec 400% increase, is that about right now? I'm sure you mean 26MB/s. That's about right now.
April 11, 201016 yr That is the transfer speed or parity build speed? For transfer speed it is pretty good (I see a little over 30MB/S write speed) but for parity build speed it is still slow by at least 1/2 of what it should be. Peter
April 12, 201016 yr Author It was for the Parity Build speed, but to update, it turns out that my Parity drive was DOA and was failing as it was going. I now have a SMART failure report showing the drive as failed and the bad sector count over 450 so I returning my Parity drive. All my other drives have passed the preclear.sh script so should be good. Thanks again for all the help, I am learning a ton by building this box.
