June 3, 20179 yr I had a thread a while back to recs on a new build. While trying to delete a reply I was drafting to someone... I managed to trash the whole thread. Anyway... I wanted to take a second to thank the community on all the recommendations and help on picking hardware and getting things together. The server is up and building the parity. So knock on wood things look like they are going well. The HW I ended up with: Case: Fractal Design D5 CPU: AMD FX 8320E M/B: ASUS MA97 PLUS PSU: Seasonic SS-660XP2 ATX 12V cache drive: Crucial MX300 2.5" 525GB Drives: 6 TB Seagate Iron wolf, 6TB WD RED (x2) GPU: ASUS Radeon HD 6450 DirectX 11 EAH6450 Silent RAM: Crucial 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1866 Some random thoughts: So far this build is way, way quieter than my old server. Not surprising as technology has changed quite a bit since I acquired my old server 10 years ago... back when Lime sold HW. While the Fractal case isn't a space saver by any stretch... it's quiet, and very easy to work with. I've built a number of PC's and servers over the years. This case was easy to fit everything in, and cord management is a breeze in this case. No knuckle busting, or squeezing my fingers in awkward positions. I can't remember who recommended it (Ashman... I think?), but thanks it was easy to deal with. Probably over kill on the RAM, but I hate needing more later. Then having to throw RAM away to free up room for newer sets. So I figured I'd get something that should outlive the server.. Once the parity is built. I need to move a ton of files over. Then I will worry about getting some VM's installed. I plan on getting a Windows VM up and running.... as well as Plex. Then the next projects are re-imaging some old windows laptops that are barely functional under Windows 10 with Chrome or Unbuntu for the kids to use. They just need them for browsing and some basic document editing. So I figure one of those 2 OS's will run better on the old laptops with less headache. If anyone has opinions on those 2 OS's... fire away.
