i just got a test unraid server built and i have no idea how to access it!

i can browse ie to tower. i can start an array i can see the server and its on my network. i know the servers ip etc but i thought it would mount under windows automatically.

its part of mshome workgroup it has sharing enabled. i tried switching the workgroup and then moving it back to mshome. thats one of the things i read while trying to get started.

ive gone through as much stuff on my own as possible but it just seems like im missing something!

also what needs to be done to see the unraid server on my mac as well?

im mildly savvy but not very. i tried the stuff i could think of and stuff that seemed like it would work. i tried pointing my browser to //tower/disk1 etc

thanks!

It is good to have a read through the wiki as purko suggested, as you'll learn most of the FAQs that newbies ask. If its the share(s) of your unraid that you cannot see in your Workgroup under Windows? I'd suggest you try the following:

1). Go to your web gui,( ie: http://tower in your web browser) of your unraid server

2). Click on the 'Settings" link

3). Under the 'Identification' section, go to the 'Workgroup:' field and enter your workgroup name, ie: MSHOME.

4). You might have to do this too, but under the 'Local master:' option, select the 'Enable' option too.

I personally don't have Local master enabled, but I have a network drive mapping directly to my server share. Hope this helps and Good luck.

since you can see both then it seems you have the ip addresses correct.

In the Control Panel under System find the workgroup name and make sure unRAID and the PC are set the same.

In unRAID on the shares name make sure to use the disk shares box and set it to share read/write.

When you go to Network Places you should see the unRAID server and double clicking it will show you the disk shares.

Once you see that, then you can stop the array and set-up user shares if you so desire.

It will not mount disks or shares automatically.

ive done nothing to change the settings on the array but now i can see it as a network drive.

im not sure why. i left it on for the last 10 hours and came back now i can see the array.

im getting awful transfer speeds on a 10/100 router, 10mb/s shouldnt i see much higher transfers?

thanks!

Good to see you have it going. As for the transfer speeds. I to had a 10/100 router and switch. It took about a week to copy 7TB of media files. Speed ranged from as low as about 6Mbs up to almost 12Mbs.

Today I upgraded to 10/100/1000 router and switch, as well as all new Cat-6 wiring. (I had cat-5, and my wiring was a real disaster.) I am hoping in the future speeds will be much better.

As MikeL as suggested, it's best to buy a 1Gbps switch and CAT6 cables (or even CAT5e) combo, you'll notice a greater improvement over a 10/100Mbps switch with older CAT5 cabling. To see even faster speeds (like massive one off copies from one host to your server), use a direct CAT6 cable from a host to your unraid server, both your host and server need to have static IP's and then copy your files onto the server. Bypassing the switch all together would give you raw network speeds I'd say.

If you're going to be transferring large amount of data from a external USB disk to your unraid server, you could directly connect your external disk enclosure, mount the drive and copy your files (pending the file system it is formatted as), bypassing a LAN connection all together too. See the thread link below for mounting a external USB disk enclosure:

For one to one copies (like a few DVD archives, stuff like that), a 1 Gbps switch with CAT6 cabling will be sufficient and you'd only go do the other suggestions for heavy duty copying like 7TBs like you mentioned.

You should be seeing speeds in the 10MB/s range. That is the limit of the network.

With a gigabit router and a parity disk you could write speeds anything from around the same speed to about 40MB/s.

I see a little over 30MB/s writing and have seen around 70MB/s reading.

ok so im slowly chugging along. ive setup a test system with 3 drives. 2 data 1 parity.

a number of things are still confusing me. sometimes my unraid server shows up in my network and sometimes it doesnt. i have it set to local master and its part of mshome.

i just did a restart of my desktop pc. i cannot see tower in my network. and tbh i dont know how i got it to show up before it just did.

right now i can map network drives on //tower/ but i cant map just //tower/. i have //tower/disk1 and //tower/disk2 mapped right now. i cannot map the share i have //tower/music.

i can connect and write to disc1 and 2 though. before i was able to use them when i just saw tower listed under network.

i havent change any settings. the only reason i restarted my desktop pc was because of a blue screen.

so again, i must not be doing something right!

oh and i am getting about 10-11 mb/s so thats par for the course.

thanks!

thanks.

This might be a silly question to ask, but for your 'Music' share that you have, have you got it set to

[Export Read/Write]?

Basically the 'Export' part means it exports or makes the share available for other guests to see, the 'Read/Write' obviously states it allows both read/write access to anyone who has got access to it. If it is set to

[Hidden Read/Write]

or has a hidden attribute, it will not advertise the share, though you can map/connect to it if you know the UNC exists or is valid. And anything with a '[Do Not xxx/xxx]' will not advertise or allow the attribute. If you change the share values, you can stop and start the array again on the main page of the web GUI (you don't have to, as it straight away applies the share setting once you hit the OK button to enable such a change, but to be sure to be sure).

What Windows OS are you running on your Desktop? Have you got a 3rd Party Internet Security package installed like Trend Micro, Comodo or something? Try temporarily disabling it. I had Trend Micro as few years ago (before I invested into a dedicated hardware firewall) and Trend Micro at times blocked my visibility to my Samba-based shares. I had to tweak the settings of the Firewall, which resolved the problem. I even experienced the same problem with Comodo too, but I now use AVG Free on all PCs I have.

I have a myriad of Windows XP ~ 7 and I've always been able to see my unraid server, even other OS's like Ubuntu can see them as well.

Hope the above assists with your troubles.

thanks for the suggestions, i double checked my settings.

the music share is set to export read/write.

one of the weird things is i cant see //tower either. when i first started the build i couldnt see tower and didnt think to manually map the drives so im not sure if that worked.

right now i dont think the shares are the issue because i cant map or see //tower.

im running win7 and dont have anything special running. i have avg i can turn it off but im not sure this is the issue.

like i said before the weird thing is at first nothing worked, then with no changes everything worked and now only mapped drives work.

seems very odd.

thanks!

There have been reports that the shares go missing with 4.5.3. I had read this and assumed it meant the disk shares would go missing too but maybe it's just the user shares. Try stopping and starting the array and see if they come back.

I did notice that Windows 7 is a little slower finding the server and showing it as one of the network places. Vista seemed to pick it up quicker. Either way at least for me, the OS (both Vista and W7) did eventually make Tower "sticky" in the network places and it always appears immediately.

You also try just typing \\tower\Music in the windows exporer address bar.

Peter

You are typing in \\tower\disk1

In you posts you consistently enter //tower/disk1 which is incorrect, forward slashes are generally used in URLs and the like and not shares.

at a command prompt try

ping tower

This will test name resolution of tower vs its IP address.

If that doesnt work

ping (ip adress of the server).

This will test IP connectivity.

In above cases you should see

Pinging tower [192.168.1.10] with 32 bytes of data
