Is packaged PSU on Centurion 590 sufficient?

I'm intending to get a 590 case to build my unraid system. I've seen that you can buy it with a 500w psu included for not much more than the case on it's own eg:

My system will have 5 1.5tb disks to start with and I'd like to be able to put in at least 10. Will the PSU be powerful enough?

 

I'm guessing the other factor other than wattage is the loudness of the PSU. Does anyone have experience with the one that Coolermaster package?

I bought a Cooler Master Centurion 590 (I'm in Oz), but all of the ones I've seen in Australia do not come with a PSU at all, so I can't really quote on how good the actual PSU is on this package.

I ended up buying a Antec True Power 500W PSU unit instead (Fetched me about $160 AUD). It is very quiet (fan runs at a low 1000 rpm and it 140mm I believe), it has ample power rails and most of the power cables are detachable from the PSU, thus allowing you to minimize the cable clutter. 500W is more than sufficient for a mobo and about 12 disk setup.

You would have to ask the supplier for the specifics of the PSU they have fitted,  pretty sure they don't come with a PSU as standard.

What's more important is the quality. 500W at 25C is different from 500W at 40/50C.

 

As for power supply sizing, unless you're using high TDP quad-/hexa-cores and monster graphics card, estimating 3A per drive on the 12V rail should give you a power supply capable of powering your system. Again, you'd want something with a single 12V rail, otherwise, you're going to have to figure out how to distribute the drives so you don't overload one 12V rail.

True, I haven't seen one either but keep in mind that 80 Plus certification tests power supplies at room temperature (23C +/- 5C). Just because a lot of power supplies are both good quality and efficient doesn't mean it's always a given. I always check power supply specifications, particularly amperage on the 12V rail and operating temperature, before buying one.

For £11 it isnt going to be an 80+ PSU. However where else would you get a 500W PSU for £11. I personally would need a lot of convincing to put such a PSU into my unraid server.

 

If it is noisy/horrible send it back and ask for a refund.

 

On Kustompcs they claim it is a coolermaster 500W supply. I have a couple of those and they are good quality rebranded PSUs. For that price (very good price just for that case), I'd be tempted to get one just to have a look.

Thanks for all the replies. Lots of suppliers seem to sell the 590 with a PSU - so I suspect it is a 'package deal' as it were - provided by Coolermaster.

 

If I'm looking to run 10 drives and buy a PSU seperatly - say a Cosair one (they seem to get a lot of mentions here) or similar brand, what's the minimum safe wattage I would need?

 

I can get a good deal on the Coolermaster package, but I'd have no use for a second power supply and the cost of sending it back if it was too noisy or just not good enough quality then the postage alone would be adding up.

Look for a PSU that can supply 30A on the 12V rail. A Corsair 450VX, should more than suffice, I think.

If that calculator's the same as the eXtreme PSU Calculator, I wouldn't trust the given values unless you select the High RPM SATA drives option. They lowered the power draw of hard drives to reflect actual operational values but that doesn't really work since the highest power draw is during boot.

 

I tried my system on the calculator (Celeron 430, 2 sticks DDR2, 32MB or less video, 20 Regular SATA) and it's recommending a minimum power supply size of 209W with 10.1A from the 12V rail. Right...

 

Iirc, actual power consumption of the system on boot is ~300W from the wall as measured by a Kill-A-Watt.

sounds about right, you probably wont be using mroe than 100W on 12A. the rest would be going through 3.3 and 5v.

the only good psu calculator is the one on the corsair website.
