iPad FileBrowser

Featured Replies

I have an app which allows an iPad to read networked shares using Samba. I have no problem with my win7 computer, but when trying to connect to my UnRaid tower, it does not work. The properties screen is on page 5 of the following pdf:

http://www.stratospherix.com/products/filebrowser/guide/QuickStart.pdf

I have entered tower into field 2, and it correctly identifies the ip address, but then seems to hang.

Does anyone have an idea if this should work?

Thanks,

Justin

Could it be, the iPad wants to talk to an iRaid ?  ;D

(sorry I don't have an idea's.. just being silly).

Funny you should say that. They will oficially announce the iRaid in early 2011. They are currently beta testing the iRaid in iRaq.

Maybe that's why the iPaq wasn't a sucess. Well in fairness the Safari web browser doesn't work with unraid's web GUI, maybe Apple is secretly trying to tell us something :)

Buy more Apple kit? :P

It should not be a safari limitation as the software is independent of safari, and browses windows file structure ok. I was hoping that my lack of understanding of samba meant I overlooked something simple.

As iPad and iPhones don't store files locally, a browser like this is worth it's weight in gold!

In fact I am such a novice, that I installed the server 4.5 beta 6 and have been using that on my windows system for the past year. Is samba actually there out of the box, or do I need to add it unraid  :-\

Yes, it is there out of the box.  unRAID was designed to work with samba.

I actually own an iPhone 3G, but ironically I use it for everything like server monitoring, PC remote controlling, uTorrent monitoring, web browsing, IM at home from it, all via WiFi, but I do not use it as a actual mobile phone (simply because the battery life sucks and the camera is worse then my first Nokia mobile I had which introduced a camera into it).

I could really never find a File Browser for the iPhone that could view samba/nfs shares and it would be great to have such an application. Does anyone know of any that can be used/bought from the iStore? Thanks.

FileBrowser is an SMB file share browsing app available for the iPad.  The same functionality is available for the iPhone in the NetPortal app, which you can also try for free with NetPortalLite.  See http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/netportal/id323133602?mt=8

We'd love to test unraid with NetPortal and FileBrowser.  Is there a beginner's guide we can read?

Full disclosure: I work for Stratospherix.

Well I bit the bullet and I bought the FileBrowser, and for the $3.99 AUD, it is worth it. It can view all Samba-based file servers (unRAID and FreeNAS) and also Windows Server file shares too. You can copy file from it and use user credentials as well for specific previliges. Two thumbs up, if you have an iPhone or iPad, buy it.

Unraided,

Can you share your settings for the unraid connection. If I enter tower, then it shows the ip but hangs. I leave the user and password fields empty.

Thanks,

Justin

Well I have basic security enabled, in which I have a 'user' and 'admins' account. The 'user' account requires no password and only allows Read Only access to my share on the server. The 'admins' account has a password and allows both Read and Write access to the share.

Going into the FileBrowser on the iPhone, I entered the hostname of the server, entered the workgroup/domain name I have, as I only want to Read the share only (not write), for the user Name I used 'user' and for the Password I selected the option 'Blank'. It connects to my unraid server fine.

Also, you might want to go on the web gui, go into the 'Settings" link, under the 'Identification' section, go to the 'Workgroup:' field and enter your workgroup name, ie: MYWORKGROUP. Also worth trying, under the 'Local master:' option, select the 'Enable' option too. I don't have Local master enabled and this has seemed to help others when their were no able to connect to their Samba share to their unraid server.

As for my FreeNAS and Windows file shares, I did the exact same thing within the iPhone FileBrowser app too, all work fine.

Unraided,

Fantastic!

The step I was missing is the username user with a blank password......I'm sure I would not have found that!

Now I can play!

No worries justinmg, thanks for mentioning this application, I always wanted to have a Samba-based network share file browser for my iPhone. Thanks.

I have now setup a proper user after enabling user level security.

I can now access my Unraid Tower from any where in the world via my VPN  8)

  • 11 months later...

In case anyone else hits this thread... You have to enable netbios in the settings to be able to connect with FileBrowser. AND you can't play mkv or avi files... Just mp3 and mp4.

If anyone have problems with this and v5.X, the SMB port has to be changed to 139.

Cheers
