USB Flash Drive not booting on a Mac mini (mid2010)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I wanted to ask, if there are any known issues with unRAID on a Mac mini (mid2010) or any Mac mini thereof.

I am using the mac mini as a cloud server a few years now, running owncloud etc. on ubuntu.

Trying out unRAID on this Mac mini turned out harder than I thought..

The USB Flash Drive (Sandisk Cruzer Fit, bought as recommended) won't boot, simple as that. I tried 3 different Mac OS versions (10.8.5,10.9.5,10.12.5) a Windows 8.1 version and the currently running ubuntu to get the USB Flash Drive bootable, did the "USB Flash Drive Preparation" w/ unetbootin under MAC OS 10.12.5, even tried all 3 different partition tables out of curiosity.

Only hint I have: unetbootin told me at the end of the process "The created USB device will not boot off a Mac. Insert it into a PC, and select the USB boot option in the BIOS boot menu." (see attached pic)

Is there anyone out there having a solution to this?

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried the getting started guide already? You'll need to scroll down a bit and expand the Mac OS X section.

As for actually booting from it, you will need to (after a reboot) press and hold the Option (⌥) key immediately upon hearing the startup chime.

yes, i did the "getting started guide", I also know how to boot from a usb stick on my Mac - I am currently running ubuntu on this Mac so that had to get onto it somehow ;)

but thanks for the attempt! any info still much appreciated!

Was this ever resolved? I'm having the same issue on a 2008 iMac and a 2014 MacBook Pro.
