New Server Hanging, Is it the VM?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help please? I have just built a 2nd server which has 4 times now hung! hardware is fine (it was my old unraid server before upgrading) it seems to be related to working on the VM? I deleted the VM image and reinstalled it from scratch but I am still having problems with it hanging? can anyone please have a look at my diagnostics and see if they can see anything?

Many Thanks

yes, it is just a test system at the moment but will be a Plex Server eventually...

More efficient to do this as a docker container, rather than through a VM

#1 thing about VMs, especially if you are using hardware passthrough, is to always ensure that your BIOS is up to date.  Simply having IOMMU enabled in the BIOS doesn't actually mean that it works.

In my case, a long time ago I did a test VM (w/passthrough) and it worked no problems, for about 15 minutes at a time.  Then random lockups.  Fine, the M/B and CPU were not so great, but I proved at least the viability of what I wanted to do.  Upgrade the CPU and MB, and still the same problem.  OK.  NP.  I'm still cheaping out, I just won't care.  The hydro cost that I'm saving isn't worth the cost of upgrading to something I know will work.

Fast forward another year, I check for a BIOS update, lo and behold one is available, update to it, and VMs with passthrough are rock solid.

Hi,

Plex is through a docker container, the VM is used for other purposes (Windows 7)

This hardware has been running as my main unRAID server for a couple of years now and used to have 4 VM's, Plex and about 5-6 other dockers and would be powered on for months at a time so I know the hardware is ok.  I built another unRAID server as my main one and delegated this one to be a sole Plex server with 1 VM to run some Windows programs that there are no Lunix alternatives for.  I have not had a chance to install those programs on the Win 7 VM as all I have loaded so far is the OS! problem is that is keeps hanging so I have not been able to get any further.  I am using the same Windows 7 ISO and drivers that are installed on my other unRAID server as well...

I dont see anything in the logs that stands out as causing the issue.
