Upgrading from Version 4 to 6

Featured Replies

Good morning, I will be upgrading my current server from unraid 4 to 6 out of necessity, my motherboard has died from a power surge so I need to upgrade. Assuming the surge didn't damage my drives, will I be able to build the new machine using unraid 6 and just swap the old drives right into the new setup? I'm hoping it's this easy. I have a screenshot of the drive assignments from my old setup, but I can no longer access any other information I may need due to the motherboard failure.

Side note, as I'm installing unraid 6 on a new machine, will I just be reformatting my flash drive installing unraid 6 and copying my old key back into it?

Thanks

Sounds about right. There are documents in the wiki about the process, but in general the only major thing you are missing is a one time run of the new permissions tool.

That's a relief to hear! I've read over the guide multiple times, and I think I've got it sorted out. Just wondering if there was anything specific to my older version that would prohibit me from doing so. Thanks!

@jakedietz

unRAID 4 was a very long road - probably 6 years or more.

Are you moving from 4.7?

There was something strange with one of the WD 2T drives - don' t remember the details - 4k sectors being emulated wit 512 byte sectors? But remember there was an issue with those drives.

Good thing that the forums remember all. Would suggest reading those transition instructions and the early announcement threads in the 5.0 series. As well as the Wiki as @jonathanm recommended.

Thanks for the input! I'm searching everything I can, I read over the wiki. Unfortunately I will be s.o.l. if there is an issue with the WD 2tb drives, as that is 4 of my 6 drives! I'm hoping for the best though. I should be getting all my parts to build the new server this weekend, so hopefully I'll have it all sorted out soon! Thanks again!

It didn't prevent them from migrating - it was something special you had to do as I recall. And not all WD 2T drives - just a specific model.

Got it, I'm still digging, this forum has a massive wealth of information, it's tough to sift through it all! Thanks!

Search the forums for

WD20EARS

They are advanced format drives. Not sure if there is an issue with migrating or not, but a lot of discussion of a certain jumper on the drive. Seemed to me that needed to be taken into consideration in moving to 5.0.

I'll search that now!

Thanks again for all your help, you went over and above and I greatly appreciate it!

Ok, the upgrade went very smoothly thanks to everyone here! Only question I have now it's my new parity drive is a 4tb. It reads as 4tb within unraid. But when I was replacing the old 2tb parity drive, it said it was syncing 2tb to the new one. It's that because I currently do not have a storage drive over 2tb?
