July 8, 20179 yr I built my unRaid box a year ago with an ASRock C2550D4 which has recently stopped posting. I've since purchased ASRock Z270 Taichi Motherboard out of desperation for a motherboard with 10 sata ports, and am currently waiting for its delivery. Is anyone else running their unRAID on the same mother board (the Z270)? Any issues I should expect? Am I able to plug my USB stick unRAID straight into the new motherboard?
July 8, 20179 yr Yes, you should be able to plug your USB into the need motherboard once you've got it all setup and unRaid should work. Most motherboards are compatible. An area of possible concern is the sata controller. To get 10 ports, an add-on controller has been added to the motherboard. Check to see which one. Marvell chips have been known to be problematic with the use of VMs. Good luck with your build!
July 8, 20179 yr I looked up the motherboard and it has 6 SATA ports + 4 extra provided by an ASMedia ASM1061 chip. This is not Marvell and should work fine. If that is not enough, a card like the LSI SAS9201 could add 8 or even 16 if needed. The 8 drive version is < $50 on eBay. This is not a server MB and does not support ECC memory. Not a dealbreaker IMO, but you should be aware. It uses i3/i5/i7 processors, but not Xeon. Currently there are issues with the Sky Lake and Kaby Lake CPUs on some motherboards. It appears that this motherboard is affected, and that a BIOS update with the fix has not been released (see link below has posts as current as July 1 from ASRock). Affected users are advised (by Intel) to disable hyperthreading until a microcode patch is applied. I would bug ASRock about when this is going to be fixed to apply some pressure, but obviously they are aware. http://forum.asrock.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=5474&title=intel-hyperthreading-bug-kaby-lake-and-skylake Looks like a very nice motherboard!
July 8, 20179 yr AsMedia works fine, I had no problem with the same controller on an Asus Maximus VIII Hero, when I tried it.
July 10, 20178 yr Author Thanks everyone for your feedback! Parts arrived today and I've POSTed. Just need to connect SATA cables and try booting to USB. Will report back once I've made more progress
