rsync to remote location, but transfer to portable drive

Recommended Posts

i wasn't sure how to title this, but here is the situation.

i have a backup server in a remote location. the internet connection in the remote location is slow... very, very slow... 1.5mb download slow (dsl in the middle of remote wisconsin).

so, i built the server at my house and transferred (rsync) the initial 40tb of data to the backup server. now i need to sync everything (about 500gb a week or so). i know that i can use the -time function in rsync, but i have already fallen about a month behind and am not entirely sure what is current and what is new anymore. i can access my remote server and telnet into it from my home computer. i can initiate an rsync function, but it will take longer than i have (current speeds puts it somewhere in the realm of 1 year or so).

my question is this. is there a way for me to do a --dry-run function, then have it output that to a portable drive plugged into the main server?

sorry, my linux is minimal at best.

thank you
