Attempting to start the array only refreshes the webpage

Featured Replies

Hi, I just set up Unraid on a PC -- an Intel NUC attached to four hard drives -- an internal SATA, an external Seagate, and two external HD drives (the external drives are attached via USB).

Unraid recognizes the drives and I can assign them to the various roles, but when I press "Start" at the bottom of the page, the webpage merely refreshes itself after a second or two, and the array doesn't start.  I've been scouring syslog and dmesg for any signs of errors and I see nothing at all.

The only strange thing I see is that the HD externals apparently are configured with a partition that starts at 64.  When I attempt to manually mount these partitions, I get an error.  When I clear the partitions and create a new partition with fdisk, the partition wants to start at 256 minimum.  Could this be why starting the array silently fails?

I appreciate all the help!

I'm sorry, but this is the rudest response I have ever gotten.  I explained the problem clear enough.

Moving to ZFS instead.  Worst customer support ever!

I'm sorry you feel that way, I was just asking for the diagnostics, without them no one can help you, there's a pinned thread about it:

Since I can see nothing in your explanation that indicates why your problem occurred, then you obviously did NOT provide enough information, so asking for the standard diagnostics seems a very reasonable request.

Also note that this forum is NOT for customer support - but for support from other users.

Correct me if I'm wrong but pretty sure Unraid works with SATA drives in the array only.  And you're trying to use USB drives.

Also, I don't think johnnie was being rude, he was asking you for the information needed to help you, as in the sticky.  He's a fellow user who, like many of us, gives his spare time to help people like you, unpaid.  He didn't chastise you for not reading the sticky in the forum, which is often common place in other fora, his reply was brief, but certainly not rude.

And if you haven't purchased a license then technically you're not a customer, you're a prospective customer.

Complete BS.  USB is supposedly "supported" as of 6.2 (although in my case it very clearly does not).  There seems to be a cabal of people that say "if you don't hook up your machine exactly the way I say, then screw you"

As far as this BBS goes, it is linked from the main company website and the subject line is "General Support".

OK, so I try and post something helpful and you reply with Complete BS?!

WTF is your problem?

USB drives are supported, and they can be mounted, and accessed, but not assigned to the array afaik.

I'm sure there is a cabal of people on here that think you're rude and arrogant as well.

Please explain to me what the real story is.  I have heard that unraid as of 6.2 supports placing external USB drives into the array.  You are telling me that is not the case.  I have scoured the product webpage and there is zero useful information on this topic.  I know you can add a USB drive as an unassigned device -- no one cares about that.  I want to add it to the array.

Is it possible or not?

Well none of the release announcements since 6.2.0 - 6.3.5 mention support for USB drives in the array.

I'm guessing what you want is still not supported.

Also, since every system can be different, nobody here can help unless you built your system exactly like somebody did, down to the settings of the BIOS.

No, not as far as I'm aware.  I don't know where you've heard that V6.2+ allows USB drives in the array but to the best of my knowledge that is not the case.  I may be wrong and someone else may correct me, but as a long term Unraid user I'm pretty sure it's not possible.

OK, then the product very clearly isn't right for me.  I am sorry I got jumpy, but I spent a lot of time on the trial setting things up.

6.2 beta 18 was the first release that allowed usb devices to be part of the array and cache pool.  I have never heard of the feature being removed

Which does bring us full circle back to the need for diagnostics

Just wanted to say a couple things ...

1 - Our forums are some of the most un-rude forums out there. @johnnie.black may have been terse, not rude. It's just that he has answered over 6600 questions and 1/2 of those are asking someone to post their diagnostics file so he can try to help them.

2 - The forums are moderated and mostly manned by volunteers. We do not work for LimeTech, get no monetary compensation, and basically help out here because we believe in the product and like to help others.

3 - USB drives ARE supported in an array, although not heartily endoresed. Not sure why the NUC isn't working. I have a few NUCs and would love to be able to make it into a portable unRAID server. Will be watching with some interest to see if you get this working.

I stand corrected, apologies.  But I been here long enough to know that I can get caught out, which is why I always word my posts carefully so they're not taken as gospel.

In defence of the OP on the USB point, it is rather confusing.
