Question about backplane to HBA

Featured Replies

I am new to mini-SAS and such and the backplane on the supermicro chassis I have has 2 mini-SAS ports. If I read correctly, they both have access to all 12 drive bays, correct? And I have also read that the IBM M1015 HBA card I bought has 2 mini-SAS connections, and each one only takes in 4 drives? So after more research I found that I would need a SAS expander. I was looking at the HP SAS Expander. I read that it supports up to 24 or 36 drives (don't quite remember but either of those numbers is at least double what I need) but also that each port on the card only takes in 4 drives. If all of this is true, how do I access all 12 od the drives from the backplane if there are only 2 mini-SAS ports?

If the backplane has 2 SAS ports for 12 devices then it has a built-in expander.

Oh, alright. Well when the IBM card gets here today I guess I'll find out then! Thanks.

Ok so that did work. I am wondering though if it is better to leave it at the firmware I have it at or should I flash it to LSI9211-IT?

I also notice that it forces all my drives to be 2.2tb.. Would anyone know why that is happening? j2qYGkV.png

The ID's of the drives clearly state 3 3TB's and 1 8TB.

Probably an old firmware, flash to LSI p20 IT.

Ok thats what I got from googling around a bit as well. Is p20 IT better than what I suggested? I was about to flash to 9211 IT with this tutorial. https://www.servethehome.com/ibm-serveraid-m1015-part-4/

If the p20 is better do you have a tutorial/link on hand or the files?

Thanks.

There's a pinned thread about crossflashing on the Storage subforum.

PS. it's also possible the backplane you bought is limited to 2TB.

Just flashed. All good! Thanks. It Also does appear to be an extender since I plugged in more drives and they show up! YESjhLc.png
