This caused the new drive to display a red X for status after having been mounted in the array with a green dot. I eliminated the card from the VM and that removed the card from the XML as a host device. I reinstalled the drive into the array and now everything works properly. My take away is that you don't want to pass the HDD controller through as a host device on your VM. Only your graphics and audio.
