Start button not enabled when replacement drive is installed

Featured Replies

Hi Unraid support,

I have a few problems with my Unraid Pro 6.3.5 at the moment. I have a supposedly failed 8TB WD red after only 6 weeks (suspisious) but I have just sourced a replacement and on installing ot I do not get a clickable start button. Extracts of the status page following to show situation.

It seems to say everything it should but does not enable the actions I need to get a rebuild happening. Why not?

p.s. would have thought support for direct paste of images would be possible in this day an age...

Thanks in advance.

Why won't a pasted screenshot attach in this thread?

Save your screenshot as a file and then attach it.

Worked that out. Modified original post. Refresh to see it.

Are you using Firefox?    If so your problem is a bug in the latest Firefox in handling of checkboxes.    It is not showing the checkbox against the “Yes I want to do this” text that needs to be checked to enable the Start button

As itimpi said, this is a known issue with Firefox v54, it doesn't show checkboxes. Use a different browser.

Well i'll be darned. How long has that been the case? If that checkbox for Unraid is the only thing I have seen that doesn't work in firefox then that makes it Firefox's fault?

Anyhow, thanks for the quick assist.

Related situation question but maybe a different subject, all the while I have been running with Disk1 synthetic, the cache drives have not been used when adding new data to the array. Is this expected behaviour?

Thanks Bonienl. So was it introduced with v54? It is the same browser I built the array with but with the frequency of updates these days it is possible it wasn't on v54 at the time. That is pretty tragic if that is so.

It was introduced in Firefox when they released version 54 (prior versions were all okay). Bug has been confirmed by Mozilla and will be fixed in a future release.

You mean disk1 in emulated mode?

This requires to rebuild disk1 on either a new disk or the current disk, if you believe the current disk has no errors.

The use of cache is unrelated.

  • Author

That is my point. I believed that the use of cache was unrelated but ever since the disk1 error, the SSD cache has not been being used for new data.

Hmm. May have made a bit of an error in judgement. Decided to try rebuild on the original disk suspecting it of not actually being faulty, now that I have a spare or 2 available, after all it had a clean SMART status and passed the short test OK. But it looks to have blown up badly. The below console errors were thrown and the rebuild was logging massive errors on disk2 and disk3.

I stopped the rebuild after only a minute or so but on stopping the array, the GUI is not responding but I can log into CLI. Any advice on how to proceed? I want to retry the rebuild with the replacement drive this time.

First thing you need to do is run a check and repair on your USB stick (you can use Windows for that). You better download the zip file again and copy its content to the USB stick. Currently there is corruption on your USB stick.

Reboot your system with the new drive installed and let it rebuild disk1.

Hmm. My Unraid install is in a VM on VMware 6.5 with passthru controllers (Super Micro). (that for background).

Every time I restart UNraid I have to re run the makeboot on the USB to be able to boot from it again. Part of why I said a few problems at the start of the thread. I was going to bring it up after resolving the array rebuild though. Is my USB faulty or is VMware doing something screwy with it?

Surely the massive logged errors against the other two WD drives is not caused by a USB problem (corruption or fault)?

This makes no sense.

Current status is I can log into CLI through SSH or VMware console but I cannot get a page load from the GUI. Array was supposed to be doing a shutdown but never came back from after the message unmounting disks....

I don't want to invalidate the parity as it is the only thing keeping me from loosing 7.6TB.

Also the errors I see in what I sent all say XFS(array) or BTRFS(cache) so what clued you to a USB problem?

Hello? Anyone responding to my last?

OK. Have done all that.

Windows prompted for repair (impropper dismount) on plugging in the USB.

Did full scan and repair. No errors found.

Re-copied over content of 6.3.5 download and reran makeboot.

booted and running but this error on the console again after boot.

Console-3.PNG.199896656be3a82be1fd553001104ef7.PNG

What is the lines

xz: (stdin): Compressed data is corrupt

and

cat:write error: Broken pipe

errors about?

Are these what was concerning before in the output from Yesterday? Like today, these errors come up at first after boot. They did not coincide with the problems with the rebuild yesterday.

These errors indicate something wrong with the image itself. Did you download a new image from the Limetech site?

  • Author

I reused the image I downloaded about 2 weeks ago after the hard drive failed. Also I copied over everything except the config directory. As I recall back then the only way I could get it to boot after the initial drive failed and it went offline was to pull that download off the limetech site. I checked MD5 just now of both the copy I downloaded last and the one I had on the array share. Matches your published MD5. Compounding factor is that my software and email mailbox files are all stored on the unRAID shares.

Is it the USB at fault then? Something with VMware or plopk?
