Cheapest 4K Graphics Card?

Featured Replies

I'm looking to find a cheap, low end, but capable of 4k output graphics card.

I'll be running a virtual machine which will output LibreELEC to one of my 4k tvs.

No gaming, just media viewing.

It will also need to be low profile to fit into my server rack.

Any suggestions?

Might look at an Nvidia GT 710 card. I have one in my old HTPC, and it does 4K. You might take special care with whether it supports 30Hz or 60Hz. Weird but they are only supposed to support 30, but mine runs at 60 in what it refers to as "PC mode". Anyway, check it out. They are cheap and low profile.

Ahh, nice looking budget card.  Which output are you using for your HTPC?

Haven't used in several years. Was pumping 1080p into pre-amp and then preamp to TV. Worked great! CPU is a dual-core E6700. Cat's pajamas then!

My experience with the gt 710 is that it will output a 4k desktop image but won't even play youtube 4k videos. Same for the gt 730. I own several.

There was a single slot version of the RX460 that looked promising. But I could only find it from one place and they were gouging on the price. Might want to see if you have better luck.

With that said, what do you use for your graphics card now to output a 4k signal clearly?

Guess I wasn't specific.  I meant output such as DVI, VGA or HDMI?  So what are you using now that you're not using one of these?

I'm not running 4k directly to my to from a gpu anymore. Now I use network file access via the tv itself. When I did it with the 710/730 it used hdmi.

i have a 1050 that will do 4k but I haven't hooked it up to my tv, the server it is in is quite heavy (dl580 g7) and far from the tv

I was running HDMI into my receiver with the 710.

I am now using a NUC instead of the HTPC. None of my TVs are 4k (except now my computer monitor), so haven't tried the NUC yet. But is is supposed to work fine. It can handle 8 bit HEVC, but not 10 bit based on what I have read.

Great point!  I forgot that my TV has all those smart apps.  I could easily run Plex directly on the TV and completely bypass any sort of need for a GPU.
