Vonslappy
Hi folks. I'm brand new to unRAID, so please forgive any 101-level boneheadedness. Also, please let me know if this question belongs elsewhere. TL;DR Hardware is assembled, will not boot unRAID 6.3.5 or 6.3.4 from USB Flash Device. Chromium OS boots from same USB without a hitch. Hardware: Motherboard: Supermicro X11SAT-O Processor: Intel Xeon E3-1275 v6 @3.8 GHz Memory: 8GB DDR4-2400 ECC UDIMM PSU: Corsair HX1000 (Intended) Parity Drive: 1x WD Red 10TB 5400 RPM (Intended) Storage Drives: 2x WD Red 10TB 5400 RPM (Intended) Cache Pool: 2X Mushkin 512 GB SSD USB Flash Device(s): Lexar Firefly 4Gb, Sony Micro Vault Tiny 8Gb, Sandisk Cruzer Fit 16Gb Problem: Drobo is maxed out, slow, and annoying. Time to move up. Pulled together the above listed pile of hardware, slapped it all together. BIOS runs with no issues, properly prepared (According to Lime Tech instructions, anyway) USB Flash Device loaded with unRAID 6.3.5 is attached to USB 2.0 port on Motherboard (not front panel). Trouble is, I get to "DXE--Ready to Boot" from the BIOS, and...nothing. "DXE--Ready to Boot" faintly flickers, and the read light on the USB Flash Device is lit nearly constantly, but nothing. I let things sit for several hours to see if I get any error at all, but nope. Prepared 2 more USB Flash Devices. Same problem. Reformatted, and loaded unRAID 6.3.4. Nope. Figured I'd bungled something in BIOS, Combed through settings, USB Flash Device is the only listed boot device. Downloaded Chromium OS and added it to the SanDisk USB Flash Device, and that boots immediately. Hmmm. Formatted SanDisk USB Key, prepared with unRAID 6.3.5 again...same effect. Nada. I could do the hokey-pokey with this for hours more, but I figured I'd ask folks with experience while I hoke and poke: WTF, Mate? Does the hardware list above send up any red flags for anyone? Has anyone else run into this, and figured the issue out? Any pointers are very much appreciated. Thanks! Link to comment
JonathanM
Give this a shot and see how you get on. Link to comment
tdallen
Hello and welcome. On the assumption that your motherboard supports UEFI boot, try disabling that in the BIOS and going with Legacy boot - UEFI boot isn't supported until the next release of unRAID. Link to comment
Vonslappy
@jonathanm -- Thank you. Very much appreciated. @tdallen -- Bingo! That got things rolling. Thank you both. Can't wait to get unRAID working. Link to comment

Vonslappy
Oops. Sorry. I did. Right after determining the proper boot mode, I was off and running. To date, zero issues. Proceed with confidence! Link to comment

I want to have setup kinda the same to be our Plex Media server, store media and also get all it as automatic as I can. Link to comment
Vonslappy
So far, I'm very pleased. I'm actually annoyed that I limped the Drobo along as long as I did. UnRaid far surpasses the Drobo unit on reliability and uptime alone. Bear in mind, this is the only UnRaid experience I've had, so some with deeper experience may point out valid flaws that I'm just not aware of. I had one drive that just would not pass a SMART test, but removal and replacement, preclear and all -- dirt simple. Scheduled parity checks start like clockwork, and complete in 19 hours Updates have been smooth and easy I had to add a UPS (I'm out in the sticks on solar, and power is ... inconsistent) to keep from having random parity checks/ungraceful shutdowns after power blinks, which is no fault of UnRaid, and likely an inevitable addition for most Currently, I'm running Handbrake and Plex, and am working to configure the UniFi dockers for both network control and security cameras. Besides being in over my head frequently, nothing has given me too much trouble. As a gigantic NAS with transcoding and streaming capabilities, I can't find a complaint. I could whinge about the price, but even that seems reasonable given the stability and flexibility. And, of course, the community support combined with Spaceinvader One's videos on Youtube have helped me learn the deeper details nicely. Like I said before, I wish I'd done this a year earlier. No regrets. I did research FreeNas, but balked at the process for adding storage. FreeNas was probably just as simple, but I was just too feebleminded to grasp it in the abstract. I might have figured it out with my hands on it. Link to comment
sombersalt
Hello unRaid world. I have a new build that will not boot unRaid. I used unRaid on an old Win 8.1 box and had a great experience due in large part to this support community combined with Spaceinvader One's excellent videos. IOMMU issues (not supported on old MOBO ) caused me to move on to a custom build, that is based on Spaceinvader's featured build. Cpu Intel Xeon E5 2670 V3 ES QFSA 2.2Ghz 30MB 12Core LGA2011-3 105W 22nm Processor MB- ASRock X99 Extreme4 LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Intel Motherboard CPU cooler- Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120mm PWM Fan Ram- Timetec Samsung IC 32GB DDR4 2400MHz PC4-19200 Registered ECC 1.2V CL17 2Rx4 Dual Rank 288 Pin RDIMM Server Memory Ram Module Upgrade (32GB) Power- Cooler Master V550 - 550W Compact Fully Modular 80 PLUS Gold Power Supply GPU- EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 GAMING, 02G-P4-6150-KR, 2GB GDDR5, DX12 OSD Support (PXOC) The previously working unRaid flash drive is plugged into a USB port on the back of the MOBO not a front port. The IOMMU/VT-D, Hyper threading/Intel Virtualization, and USB settings all set correctly, I think (see hyperlinked images.) Finally Firmware is up to date. I have followed many BIOS/software remedies to no avail. The boot sequence hangs on the second page of text, however on the first attempt I got this image. So the question is if I truly have a hardware issue, how best to go about diagnosing it? All components above are new except the CPU which is an "engineering sample" out of Hong Kong from a vendor who had 30 to sell and will stand by his products. If I have a BIOS / Software problem I will just keep reading or buy an hour of support. Thanks Link to comment
