I have seen some explanations on the forums but they are not very clear. Can you point me to a page where every message is explained (either in an unraid forum or any kind of wiki etc)

PS: If it is easy for you, can you also tell me if i should be worried?

  • Author

thanks Joe. The url you gave me is quite informative although it does not explain completely what i am seeing. for example what each column means or what 'pre-fail' and 'always' mean..

thanks Joe. The url you gave me is quite informative although it does not explain completely what i am seeing. for example what each column means or what 'pre-fail' and 'always' mean..

The full output, including the column headings is in the syslog

The description of the smartctl output is here: http://linux.die.net/man/8/smartctl

Some attributes are always updated, some only when an "offline" (short or long) test is performed.

Some attributes are affiliated with old age, others with errors.

For example, run-time-hours would be an old-age attribute.  When the current "normalized" value goes below the "threshold" value the disk will be considered to have reached the end of its life, and will show as failed, even if still working perfectly.

thanks, joe

that's exactly what i needed...

  • 3 months later...

I'm just going to hijack your thread as I wanted to post my preclear results for two Seagate 1.5TB drives I just completed.

I see that both have passed, however I just wanted to see about the "SMART command failed" to see if I have something setup wrong or if anything else jumps out at you?

Thanks! :)

apparently the first (pre clear) "smart" report failed.  It is possible that "smart" reporting was not enabled on the drive?  The full smart reports were logged to your syslog.  The output in the pre-clear script is on the differences between them.

  • 2 months later...

So is the failed initial SMART command okay as long as there is no problem reported in the post SMART report?  I ran the preclear script on 6 drives simultaneously.  Of the 5 that have finished 2 had normal looking logs (apparently the SMART command ran fine both pre and post) and the other 3 had the initial SMART command fail but the post SMART command ran fine and reported no errors (all statistics look normal.)

Edit to add:

All 6 drives are on the same Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 controller card.  There are 3 WD EARS drives and 3 WD EADS drives and the failed initial SMART commands occurred on both types of drive.  The two drives that have passed initial SMART commands are on separate cables from the controller card to the backplanes.
