August 15, 20178 yr I am looking at moving all my unraid drives to a new machine ill use the same bootable USB stick. But my drives will likely be plugged into different SATA ports or even a different controller since i have 3x PCI LSI Cards. Does it matter if drive are plugged into different controllers will it work itself out as long as they are all plugged in ?
August 15, 20178 yr As long as the disks are accessible, unRaid will recognize them. It uses the drive's serial number and not its port or controller to recognize it. Suggest taking a few precautions. The most common issue in transplanting an array is lose cables, which can result in lots of problems and frustration. Double check all the connections are secure. Before you disassemble, turn the auto start array setting off. After first boot in new server, carefully review the syslog for signs of drive issues (e.g., resetting links, lowering link speed, disks disconnected). These usually mean cabling issues. Resolve these issues before starting the array. I'd suggest a non-correcting parity check right after you start the array. Even if you don't want to run a full check right then, at least let out run for 10 minutes to make sure speed is reasonable and again look at the syslog for signs of disk issues or errors. I would recommend a full parity check overnight the first night. Good luck!
August 15, 20178 yr Author Great advise bjp999, disabling auto start array was going to be my next checking how to check all the drives are there without kicking the array off.
