RC7 & Ryzen 1600: Arch Linux with EFI boot

Featured Replies

Hi

Does anyone know how to configure Arch Linux as a VM on RC7 using an EFI boot?

No matter what I do I can't seem to get the EFI boot loader to install correctly.

When running the VM with SeaBios booting works, but VGA Passthrough doesn't work.

I've tried different Distros such as Ubuntu, but they just hung while booting up under VGA passthrough.

I'm running a Ryzen 1600 with Asus PRIME X370-PRO motherboard and 16Gb DDR4 2400 RAM.

I'm using an MSI NVidia GT710 Graphics Card.

Have you looked at this

?

I also have the same problem with fresh Ubuntu server guest install, without neither PCIe nor USB passthrough.

I tried editing the XML based on the other VM created by the stable release, and it boot but ethernet isn't working.

Post your vm xml

change Machine type Q35-2.8 to i440fx-2.9. Boot uefi works.

Thank you @r4id for the suggestion about switching the bios to `i440fx-2.9`

I've been using the VBIOS as explained here https://forums.lime-technology.com/topic/51230-video-guidehow-to-pass-through-an-nvidia-gpu-as-primary-or-only-gpu-in-unraid/#comment-504897.

I was able to get GRUB running in a UEFI boot using:

mkdir /boot/efi
mount /dev/sda1 /boot/efi
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=Arch
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Where /dev/sda1 is a 512MB EFI Partition created using cgdisk.

I was able to boot the VM but halfway through it hung and wouldn't go further.
