batfink
I've been trying to pre-clear the above disk for over a week now. Not every day, just on and off as I'm in no immediate hurry for more space. I'm using my "test" unraid server which behaves perfectly normally (and performed fine as my old, main unraid setup) so I've not reason to suspect anything odd with the hardware. I'm pretty sure I used it for my last pre-clear also (a 1.5TB disc) and I am already using one of these 2TB drives in my main server. The preclear does not complete and the machine locks-up so I've been unable to grab a log. The furthest the pre-clear cycle got (that I saw) was 82% of stage 2. The disc also makes some strange sounds when not being written to during the pre-clear (just sounds 'normal' when being cleared). The sound is like a rapid (7-ish per second) 'scrape' every second or two. It's plenty loud enough to hear over the sound of my main unRAID box (12 discs and planty of fans!!!). The same sound occurs if I add to my Windows 7 machine. unRAID SMART report does not show "FAILURE" and a disc scan through Windows shows nothing. I can format the drive for access in both Windows and unRAID and can write to it..... BUT THAT SOUND JUST ISN'T RIGHT !! Any ideas what I can do to test the drive further? Having never returned a HDD which did not show a SMART failure, it is reasonable for me to expect a RMA from Scan? Thanks all Quote Link to comment
WeeboTech
Do a SMART short and long test while the drive it outside of the array. Then post the smartlog. Quote Link to comment

(The test will abort when unRAID spins the disk down) Spin down is disasbled. I've tried running from unmenu and also directly from the console. When I run form the console and add the argument to create the log on my flash drive it creates the text file (contents below). I am assuming the contents would update if and when the SMART test completes. I have tried a couple of times overnight, so was probably left to run for over 8 hours. ? smartctl version 5.38 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-8 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ === START OF OFFLINE IMMEDIATE AND SELF-TEST SECTION === Sending command: "Execute SMART Extended self-test routine immediately in off-line mode". Joe L.
I am assuming the contents would update if and when the SMART test completes. I have tried a couple of times overnight, so was probably left to run for over 8 hours. ? Your assumption is incorrect. Your command requested that a "log" test be performed. It is done internally on the disk. The results are logged internally on the disk. To see the results of the test you must wait the suggested length of time and then issue a request for a smart "status" report. Since it has been over 8 hours, you can do that now. Towards the bottom of the SMART status report will be a summary of the short and long tests requested recently and their results. That section of the smart status report will look like this: SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1 Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error # 1 Short offline Completed without error 00% 8636 - # 2 Short offline Completed without error 00% 8636 - # 3 Extended offline Completed without error 00% 62 - # 4 Short offline Completed without error 00% 0 - The "extended offline test" is the "long" test. (lack of lubrication, etc) RMA the drive. I'd be curious of the "Spin-Up Time parameter and its value next time. I'd expect it to take longer and longer to spin up as the noise/friction gets worse. WeeboTech
Preclear failed at some point again. Box was locked up so couldn't see how far it had got. The SMART logs look ok.. even though you hear noise. are you sure it is that drive and not something against a fan? Now... if your machine is locking up there's a bigger problem. Try purko's addition to the go script for troubleshooting. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5976.msg60189 I would also switch to tty12 after you fire up the pre-clear. If your box is locking up, there's another hardware issue coming into play here. It's very rare for a linux box to freeze unless there is a hardware compatibility issue. Quote Link to comment
batfink
Yes, I'm certain it's the drive making the noise. It does it regardless of which machine it is in. It's currently in my 'test' unraid box, which i also use for preclearing etc. Not sure what you mean by tty12 but I'll search the forum. Thanks Quote Link to comment
WeeboTech
Not sure what you mean by tty12 but I'll search the forum. Put in purkos recommended go script changes for troubleshooting. Then select the troubleshooting entry upon rebooting your unraid server. After the machine boots up switch to TTY12 bby pressing ALT-F12 to switch to virtual terminal 12. Press ALT-F1 to switch back to the first virtual terminal. Quote Link to comment
