April 28, 201016 yr I have the "Network discovery" turned on, but no disks are shown on my network? What should I try to do to get the disks to show? I can access unraid main through web, but I cannot access the individual files or folders. With XP everything works great.
April 28, 201016 yr Is your unRAID server on the same workgroup as your Win7 computer? The default workgroup name in WinXP was 'Workgroup,' but in Vista and Win7 they changed it to 'MShome'. You can change the workgroup on either your Win7 computer or your unRAID server, it shouldn't matter which just so long as they both match. I like setting them both to 'Workgroup' because 'MShome' is just dumb.
April 29, 201016 yr Also, you might want to enable 'Local Master' on the Settings link of your unRAID server as see if this helps. Rajahal is right also, both server and guests need to share the same Work Group name. Have you enabled the Disk shares to Read Only or Read/Write as well? If it is set to Don't Export, you won't see your disk shares at all.
April 29, 201016 yr If everything works well with XP then I would concentrate on the problem being a WIN 7 issue. I have no issue with win 7 or XP accessing the disks on the unRaid system. I do not use shares on the unRaid system. All the computers on my network have the same workgroup name and that is important. Can windows see the the disks on the XP system assuming they are properly shared?
April 29, 201016 yr Author Workgroup was default in Win7 and Local master to Yes. No disks shown. Are Workgroup same as Work network? Win7 says my PC belongs to homegroup. XP was fine, no probs, but this doesn't have "My Network Places".
April 29, 201016 yr Right click on the my computer icon and select properties. That will show you a screen that has the workgroup that this machine belongs to. In Win 7 the homegroup is not the same thing as the workgroup AFAIK. I am not sure what work network is as I have never seen that term
April 29, 201016 yr Right, homegroup and workgroup and two different things. Homegroup is basically a network between several Windows 7 computers (doesn't work with Vista or XP as far as I know). Workgroup is a network between several computers, which can be a mixture of Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Should unraid show up under the network option in Computer forlder? Could I map the drives using some path, eventhough the server doesn't show in Network?
April 29, 201016 yr I know I have at least one Win7 computer in my workgroup that refuses to see \\tower but if I use the IP address it works fine. Hrm... wonder if the fact that its an OEM machine with an OEM win7 means it didn't insteall NETBIOS .... gonna have to check that when I get home. CaptainSpalding: is this an OEM copy of Windows 7? Check you adapter properties and make sure the Netbios protocol is installed. Just a random thought.
April 29, 201016 yr You can try editing the Hosts file on the machine to see if that helps at all. Just google "Windows HOSTS file" and you should come up with an answer quick.
April 29, 201016 yr let me summarize: Win 7 workgroup name is "WORKGROUP" XP workgroupname is The unraid machine (mine is called "TOWER" which is how it comes) workgroup is ?? if your xp machine sees the unraid macj=hine in network neighborhood ( my network) then they are both members of the same workgroup The windows host names file has the IP of your unraid server with its name (e.g. TOWER) Being able to address a machine through IP (e.g. web) has no bearing on wether the two machines are in the same network neighborhood which is a windows thing.
April 29, 201016 yr You can change unRAID's workgroup on the settings page, I believe. 'Tower' is the server name, which is not the same as the server's workgroup.
May 6, 201016 yr Author CaptainSpalding: is this an OEM copy of Windows 7? Check you adapter properties and make sure the Netbios protocol is installed. Just a random thought. With the search option I found a bunch of netbios named files. One of them ending .sys. I really don't know what version this is, cause I got this from a friend who joined some school that got him 3 free Microsoft licences. This is Windows 7 Professional.

May 12, 201016 yr Author Well, I don't know what I did but it works! Maybe it's because I disabled my firewall when installing Linkstation to my network. But I had set network as Workgroup and Local Master was disabled.
