removing the cache disk

Featured Replies

I am wondering how difficult it is to remove a cache disk from my array.  Unfortunately i need to pull it out to use it in one of my PC's.  do i just shut down the server and remove the drive?  is that all there is to it?

1) From the 'shares' page, click the 'move now' button to make sure all your data is safely moved off the cache drive.  This move may take a while, depending on how much data you have on the drive.

2) Once you are sure that the cache drive is empty, Stop the array

3) Unassign the cache drive on the 'devices' page

4) Power down the server

5) Physically remove the cache drive

6) Start up the server and start the array.  Everything should look normal (green balls, no errors)

ok so I clicked the move now button and it took no time at all - the page just refreshed and that was that... is it supposed to give me some visual feedback to tell me when the move is done?

can i assume that there just want much on the cache disk and its all set?  how can i check to be sure that the cache disk is empty?

Type

ls -alR /mnt/cache

All you should see are directories.

Alternatively:

find /mnt/cache -type f

Or just set your cache drive to export and take a look inside it.  As long as there's no data in there, then you are good to go.  If you are using an older version of unRAID you may see a bunch of empty folders.  If you are using a newer version of unRAID, then the drive should be completely empty.

By the way, I did this exact process over the weekend (my steps above) and it went flawlessly.
