unRAID USB 3 Support

Featured Replies

Fingers crossed this is in the right section! ;)

I'll keep this short and sweet, USB 3.0 + unRAID (so far of any version I've been on, for this post I'll focus on 6.4rc8q) = Disaster.

Here's what happens after an indeterminate amount of time when booting unRAID on a USB 3.0 drive in a USB 3.0 port:

 kernel: fat__get_entry: 70 callbacks suppressed
 kernel: FAT-fs (sda1): Directory bread(block 32768) failed
 kernel: FAT-fs (sda1): Directory bread(block 32769) failed
 kernel: FAT-fs (sda1): Directory bread(block 32770) failed
 kernel: FAT-fs (sda1): Directory bread(block 32771) failed
 kernel: FAT-fs (sda1): Directory bread(block 32772) failed
 kernel: FAT-fs (sda1): Directory bread(block 32773) failed
 kernel: FAT-fs (sda1): Directory bread(block 32774) failed
 kernel: FAT-fs (sda1): Directory bread(block 32775) failed
 kernel: FAT-fs (sda1): Directory bread(block 32776) failed
 kernel: FAT-fs (sda1): Directory bread(block 32777) failed
 kernel: FAT-fs (sda1): Directory bread(block 32777) failed

From this point, the GUI starts to die, popping up docker template errors, missing 'blah', etc. Basically a very unhappy experience.

Now before anyone says I'm being silly, USB 3 makes no difference, use a USB 2 port, etc. Yes - I completely agree that the obvious solution is to avoid USB 3... But I shouldn't have to.

Reasoning:

- USB 3.1 (gen1/2) is the way forward, companies releasing USB Type C drives left right and centre, devices shipping exclusively with that port *cough* apple *cough*

- USB 2.0 is slow, legacy. Eventually it will die.

Those obviously aren't 'burning issues' (yet) I can still go and buy USB 2 drives to my hearts content :) But here's where I got my motivation for this.

I have a USB 3.0 Sandisk Extreme Fit, this has been running unRAID happily for the past year and a half. I've been plugged into the internal USB 2.0 header on my Asrock E3C226D2I motherboard. I've been looking around at Skylake / Kabylake boards, server/workstation class of course (so they have an internal USB plug, among ECC RAM, etc. - I digress!) The boards I've been looking at all feature USB 3.0 everywhere!

Take the Asus P10S-M for example; USB 3.0 internal plug, 2x USB 3.0 on the rear, 2x USB 2.0 on the rear (but I'd like my USB to remain inside the chassis) which leaves me with the USB 2.0 header blocks onboard... with a janky adapter cable sticking out inside my chassis. First world problem, I'm sure! But nevertheless, unRAID should surely look to support USB 3.0

If there is anything I can do to assist I'm happy to do so. My server specs are listed in my sig. I do run in a USB 2.0 port for now but boot-up times are noticeably quicker when I run off USB 3.0, I'm happy to change it over to the blue ports in order to grab diag.bundles once the server falls over!

I'm having the exact same problem... Just found your post in a Google search.

Any news on this?

I am unaware of any changes to this kind of problem. The best explanation of it I have found is here.
