VM losses connected USB device randomly

I'm trying to figure out what's causing it. I'm running openhab on a VM and it works fine but what seems to be randomly it looses the zwave usb dongle and the only way it works again is if I shut the vm down, unplug and plug the dongle back in and start it back up. Is this a hardware, unraid or dongle issue? How can I debug this?
