Migrating to new hardware, retain data and settings

Featured Replies

I've added new hardware over the months and its time I swapped my unRaid server to different hardware.  I have an existing installation and (ideally) I'd like to simply swap the HDDs over, plug in the unRaid USB and have everything auto-magically work. In reality, I don't expect this to happen but one can dream.

So, what do I need to do to successfully migrate from Server A to Server B without loosing any data. I'd rather not have to reinstall unRaid and all dockers from scratch.

Server A (existing solution)

* 8 HDDs in storage array (non-hot swappable)

   - Half the drives are plugged a generic SATA expansion card

* 1 SSD in cache

* A few VMs

* PLENTY of Dockers

* Intel i7 CPU

* 32Gb RAM

Server B (new solution) - This is solely going to be used as data storage, all existing VMs will be migrated to ESX so I think an i3 is more than sufficent

* Intel i3

* 8Gb RAM

* Hot swappable drive bays

* Different SATA expansion card (different chipset from Server A)

This was 100% successful and fault free. I took a copy of the USB, just in case.

The job was simple; pull the drives out of the old system and install them in the new system. I booted into safe mode and to my surprise everything looked good. I then booted into normal mode and everything just worked.
