September 19, 20178 yr Hey all, Setting up my plex server again and im sick of dealing with windows licenses so i figured id give ubuntu a try this time around (i really need to start learning linux anyways). I have my share up and running and can access it from windows fine and in ubuntu i can browse to the share but i guess i need to figure out how to permanently mount it so the plex server running on that machine will see the share. I have smb turned on right now but do i need to turn on NFS or can i use smb in linux and then how do i permanently mount it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Yes, SMB is the Windows file sharing protocol and the 'spec' is controlled by MS. As I understand it, Samba was reversed-engineered from it by a group of Linux users many years ago. I would try it before I would try to use NFS. (Because of the wide spread use of Windows computers in the business world, almost all OS's and networks have SMB support either built-in or available. And it is actively supported across these products.) 33 minutes ago, Blindsay said: that doesnt tell me either if i should turn on NFS I don't have a lot of experience with NFS. A few years back, I did setup up a couple of media players to use NFS (SMB had performance issues at the time but those have been corrected) and I can tell you that SMB was a simple matter to implement as compared to NFS! EDIT: With NFS, I believe you have to have a static IP address... Edited September 19, 20178 yr by Frank1940
September 19, 20178 yr Community Expert One more thing, to go "Settings' >>> 'SMB' >>> 'Workgroup settings' and set " Local master browser: " to yes The reason for doing this is that of you don't have a Windows computer active on your network, you might nott have a computer with the Local Master function turned on. Plus, You really want your unRAID server to be the Local Master! If you want to know more about what the "Local Master" is and does, read here: Edited September 19, 20178 yr by Frank1940
