May 2, 201016 yr I was copying a movie to my unRAID yesterday and the entire machine locked up mid-copy. I've never had that happen before, I couldn't get in through the web interface, telnet, or direct console, and the clean shutdown on power button did not work either. I ended up having to hold down the power button. Upon reboot it started a parity check as expected and I let it run overnight. This morning it said that it had 332 parity updates and the log seemed to imply it was because of drive 13. So I just ran a couple long SMART tests on drive 13, but I'm confused because it says it PASSED the overall health self-assessment test, but it finishes the long tests very quickly and gives the following results: # 1 Extended offline Completed: read failure 90% 3984 424654579 # 2 Extended offline Completed: read failure 90% 3980 424654579 So, I'm not sure what is up with the "read failure", is my drive hosed or not? TIA Here's the complete report: Statistics for /dev/sdj SAMSUNG_HD154UI_S1XWJ1KS807856 smartctl -a -d ata /dev/sdj smartctl version 5.38 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-8 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Device Model: SAMSUNG HD154UI Serial Number: S1XWJ1KS807856 Firmware Version: 1AG01118 User Capacity: 1,500,301,910,016 bytes Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show] ATA Version is: 8 ATA Standard is: ATA-8-ACS revision 3b Local Time is: Sun May 2 00:39:56 2010 GMT+5 ==> WARNING: May need -F samsung or -F samsung2 enabled; see manual for details. May 2, 201016 yr That drive is indeed poorly. For now each bad sector is being mapped out to the spare sectors the drive has. 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 095 095 010 Pre-fail Always - 209 This means 209 bad blocks have been moved. 196 Reallocated_Event_Count 0x0032 095 095 000 Old_age Always - 209 This means each move was successful 197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 099 095 000 Old_age Always - 28 This means 28 more blocks are being treated as suspicious 198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0030 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 1 Bad sector found during offline testing. 210 bad sectors and another 28 pending. Time for a new drive IMO.
May 2, 201016 yr Author Thanks Kaygee, I was afraid of that. I guess I'll order a new one and start the warranty process on this one.
June 2, 201016 yr Author Continuing saga here. I ordered a new drive and got the system back up. I replaced the original (Samsung 1.5TB) through warranty and even though I don't need the replacement in the system yet, I started to preclear it and test it since it says it is recertified. SMART was turned off when I got the drive, but I turned it back on and I think there are problems with this recertified drive. Specifically the Hardware_ECC_Recovered value was over 400,000,00 after doing the pre-clear. Wondering if this was a one-time issue or will be ongoing, I re-ran the pre-clear last night. The system crashed sometime during the night (never a good sign), and now the value is over 700,000,000. The complete SMART is below - I don't know enough about what the Hardware_ECC_Recovered value signifies - should I be worried? June 2, 201016 yr You've not been paying attention to previous posts on how to interpret SMART reports. The "raw" column, on the far right, is meaningful ONLY to the manufacturer with just a few exceptions. for all the others, you can only go by the "normalized" value. 195 Hardware_ECC_Recovered 0x001a 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 722813379 Your "normalized value is 100, basically it is a starting value. The worst value ever is 100, (the same initialized starting value) the failure threshold is "0" If your current value ever drops to zero, the disk will have been considered as failed by SMART tests. All disks at all times use hardware error correction. It is how they work. The "raw" value has some meaning to the manufacturer, and they are not telling anyone how to interpret it. (trade secrets ) Sometimes they show the raw value, sometimes they keep it hidden. Trust me, your Raw_Read_Error_Rate is not "0" no disk has zero... but same issue, on those disks that show the raw number, it is meaningless. The only RAW numbers that you need to care about and can usually trust to be actual counts are Reallocated_Sector_count and Current_Pending_Sector (pending re-allocation when next written to) Other than that, you just need to compare the current (or worst) value to the threshold to determine if you have a problem. If an attribute does go below the threshold, that attribute is marked as FAILING_NOW. There is nothing wrong with your disk. No attribute is remotely close to its threshold for failure. Joe L.
