October 7, 20178 yr I installed a RAID controller and SMART quit working. I see under the "Device is" section the drives are "Not in smartctl database [for details use: -P showall]." All of the drives I'm using used to show SMART details but once I installed the controller they stopped. Also note that I have adjusted Any ideas? root@Tower:~# smartctl --scan -d sat /dev/sda -d scsi # /dev/sda, SCSI device /dev/sdb -d scsi # /dev/sdb, SCSI device /dev/sdc -d scsi # /dev/sdc, SCSI device /dev/sdd -d scsi # /dev/sdd, SCSI device /dev/sde -d scsi # /dev/sde, SCSI device /dev/sdf -d scsi # /dev/sdf, SCSI device /dev/sdg -d scsi # /dev/sdg, SCSI device /dev/sdh -d scsi # /dev/sdh, SCSI device /dev/bus/1 -d megaraid,8 # /dev/bus/1 [megaraid_disk_08], SCSI device /dev/bus/1 -d megaraid,9 # /dev/bus/1 [megaraid_disk_09], SCSI device /dev/bus/1 -d megaraid,10 # /dev/bus/1 [megaraid_disk_10], SCSI device /dev/bus/1 -d megaraid,11 # /dev/bus/1 [megaraid_disk_11], SCSI device /dev/bus/1 -d megaraid,13 # /dev/bus/1 [megaraid_disk_13], SCSI device /dev/bus/1 -d megaraid,14 # /dev/bus/1 [megaraid_disk_14], SCSI device /dev/bus/1 -d megaraid,15 # /dev/bus/1 [megaraid_disk_15], SCSI device smartctl -i /dev/bus/1 -d megaraid,8 root@Tower:~# smartctl -i /dev/bus/1 -d megaraid,8 smartctl 6.5 2016-05-07 r4318 [x86_64-linux-4.9.30-unRAID] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-16, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Device Model: WDC WD80EFAX-68LHPN0 Serial Number: 7SGGEM3C LU WWN Device Id: 5 000cca 252c6904f Firmware Version: 83.H0A83 User Capacity: 8,001,563,222,016 bytes [8.00 TB] Sector Sizes: 512 bytes logical, 4096 bytes physical Rotation Rate: 5400 rpm Form Factor: 3.5 inches Device is: Not in smartctl database [for details use: -P showall] ATA Version is: ACS-2, ATA8-ACS T13/1699-D revision 4 SATA Version is: SATA 3.2, 6.0 Gb/s (current: 6.0 Gb/s) Local Time is: Sat Oct 7 15:17:08 2017 EDT SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. October 7, 20178 yr Community Expert That's one of the reasons HBAs are recommended instead of RAID controllers, what controller are you using? Some can be flashed from RAID to IT(HBA) mode.

October 8, 20178 yr Don't think that model can be flashed to IT mode. At least not what I found here anyway: https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/help-requested-crossflash-a-dell-oem-lsi-9271-to-lsi-9211-it-mode.7822/ You will have better luck if you get a model that can be flashed like a Dell H310 or H200 or IBM 1015. Also if you get an LSI 9201 it does not need to be flashed it is already an HBA and not a RAID card.
October 8, 20178 yr Author Thank so much for the help! So does this mean I'm dead in the water? Are there any other options?
October 8, 20178 yr You could try the controllers bios to see if you can export your drives as JBOD that might help. Not sure if that will do anything for smartctl or not however.
October 10, 20178 yr Author Apparently exporting JBOD is not an option with my RAID card. Does anyone know of a work around?
October 10, 20178 yr Definitely if someone knows more wait for their response but it is looking like you need to get an HBA like the LSI 9201/9211 cards on eBay if you want this to work. You should be able to get equal or more if you sell the RAID card to buy an HBA. If you don't want a LSI 9201/9211 you could get a Dell H200/H310 or an IBM M1015 and cross flash them to 9211 mode.
