So I decided to start upgrading my drives to a max size of 1.5TB today and reassigned my parity drive (previously 1TB) to the new largest drive. About 2 hours after starting the array and parity sync, I decided to check on progress and I was greeted with these stats:

 

Total size: 1,465,138,552 KB

Current position: 6,127,744 (0.4%)

Estimated speed: 728 KB/sec

Estimated finish: 33396.5 minutes

 

My entire array is 5 drives, 2 IDE, 3 SATA. Now I know IDE drives are slow, but a consistant ~750KB/sec seems crazy. Any suggestions?

Post a syslog.  Otherwise, nobody can help you other than to agree... it is slow and not normal.

 

My detailed diagnosis with all the information you given so far is therefore... something is probably not right, parity checks do not usually take 23.19 days.

run a full smart test on hdb.

 

looks like its having trouble reading?

 

you shoudlve done a complete health check before upgrading disks, just in case you have a fialure nao ^^

It might be disk "hdb" or it might be a bad IDE cable.  I'd try a different cable.

 

Make sure it is an 80 conductor cable... Typically one with "gray, blue, and black" connectors..

 

Do not use a 40 conductor cable, as it is not rated for the speeds needed and will result in DMA being disabled. (It is disabled if you notice on both hda and hdb.
