Questions about Western Digital hard drives

Featured Replies

I am assembling my first unRAID build, and I purchased a Western Digital 2TB WD20EADS drive for the parity drive.  I've read in some posts that a jumper is needed on pins 7 & 8 on some WD drives.  -Do I need a jumper on this drive, and what does jumpering it do?  The sticker on the drive only talks about jumpers 1-6.

My first storage drive will be a 500 GB Western Digital WD5000AAKS.  (I've had it for some time, sitting around new, unused.)  -Does it also need a jumper or not on pins 7 & 8?

So far everything is going together nicely, I have the motherboard, CPU, heatsink, PSU, and fans all mounted in the case, and the first two drives mounted, now I'm just wiring everything up.  Before I get started I wanted to make sure I have this hard drive jumpering thing set correctly so I don't have any problems with that.

The only WD model requiring the 7-8 jumper is EARS, so for your EADS and AAKS drives you should not use this jumper.

I have not checked the purpose of the other jumpers on the models you will be using and don't have details to hand but I have used both of those models in the past and not required any special jumper settings.
