Areca ARC-1170 - drives showing as free not JBOD (UPDATED)

Featured Replies

I'm swapping controllers and have installed a Areca-1170.  I had to flash the firmware for it to see any drive great than 2tb, that went smoothly.

I have the controller configured in JBOD mode instead of Raid.  However, with the drives attached, 3 are showing as 'Free' instead of JBOD.

If I let it boot through to unRaid, the 3 'Free' drives do not show as available devices.

Anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong??

I've tried a few things with that 250gb drive, it wasn't in the array...

  • Moving the disk to another port
  • Formatting on a Windows machine

Still comes up as Free.

The 2TB Seagate is the one that I'm missing from the array.  Could I do a swap-disable, replacing my parity with the 8TB Red (marked as JBOD) and move the existing parity (3TB) to take the place of the Free 2TB Seagate???

hmm my time with Areca's is limited. have no experience with 1170's. I have 1246 and 1883, and have used in JBOD and RAID with multiple different types of drives, I haven't seen what you're showing. Sorry I can't help more.

Per Areca support...  While the card may have 24 ports, only the first 16 are available in JBOD mode.  That explains it and is a disappointing answer.

@bobmagnuson thanks for posting the conclusion.

With the remaining disks marked 'FREE' in JBOD mode, will it let you create a RAID set?

If not, maybe the inverse would work... I am able to set it in RAID mode (on my 1264)  and set disks to 'pass-thru'. Will yours allow? I know it's not he same thing, but perhaps it's makes the card more viable to you.

That's a good question.  I've got it working now, I'm afraid to mess around with it any more!

Next upgrade will be to newer technology.
